W. PORTNBR.
GIGAR PRESS;
No. 878,988. Patented Jan. 24, 1888.
Inventor,
mum/n Po T/vE/s' I VVzbzesses m14 am AUrn-rain SATES PATENT WILLIAM'PORTNER, 0F RED Lion, `runas YLvANIA.
CIGAR-PRSS.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Noa. 376,963, dated January 24.-, 18`88.
Application filed August 1, 1887.`
To @ZZ whomima/y concern: f
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PORTNER, of Red Lion, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inigar-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and-exact description of the inventiom which will enabley others skilled Vin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object and nature of my invention will y be fully set forth inthe following specification r5 and claims.` n
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of myk improved cigarpress. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached details, andfFig. 4 isa secf tional view ofthe top rail on the line x x of 2O Fig. l. Y 'f t I Similar letters indicate similar parts in the respective figures. f p f A is a bed-plate, which, with the posts B B and the top rail, C, constitutes the main frame 4of my improved press. These parts are all rigidly connected together in. any well-known manner. At each end of the frame are castings D, whichare securely bolted to the bedplate A and the rail Gand serve to brace and strengthen the frame. y These castings D are v provided with ratchet-teeth d,for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.
E E are castings provided on eachk side with ratchet-teeth e, similar tothe teeth of thecastings D. The castings Fi are let into the bedplate A, and are firmly secured Athereto by screws or otherwise, and their upper ends abut against the under side ofthe toprail, C. The upper ends of these castings E are provided with slots e', for the purpose hereinafter described.
The rail C is provided with a T-shape groove, c,- (see Fig. 4,)which extends nearly the entire length of` the rail. This groove is for the reception of the screw F and nut f, the nut f being supported by means of strips c', which are firmly secured `to the under side of the rail O; These strips also serve as braces to the upper ends of the castings E,to prevent 5o them from spreading.
G G are followers, to the upper side of each Serial Fo. 2715.840. (No model.)
of .which is secured a block', G', to which ,is` also'seeured a top or cover, This block and its top or coverare adaptedvto litbetween the castings D and E or betweentwo ofthe 55.Y
,castings E, and they are provided at eachend grcoves, and, are held normally in engagement with the ratchet-teeth by means of the spring" g2. The leversv g3 are pivoted at one end to,the"6 5 Y' block G', and theirfree ends extend outward beyond thebloek. VThey are alsoattached to the latches g in such a way thatvon pressing" the levers toward each other thelatches will .y
be drawn out of engagement withthe ratchet-V teeth; The top or cover G2 serves to keepthe latches and spring inrposition, and also serves as a bearing-surface for the screw F.
H H represent molds for cigars y v The.' operation is as follows: The followerGr can be suspended in anyl position by meansof the spring-latches g' engaging` the fratchetv teeth d and e. When the desired number of molds have been placed inthe press, the follower is lowered 'and pressure applied 'by means ofthe screw F, the spring-latches sliding 'over thek inclined faces" lof the ratchets teeth as the follower is being pressed down.v When sufficient pressure has been applied, theV screw can be raised, and the latcheswillseu curely hold the follower in position by engagj ing with the ratchet-teeth. `By sliding the screw F and the nut f along the T-shaped l groove c, the slots 'ef in the upper end of the castings allowing the end ofthe screw to pass, the screw can be used to apply pressure tothe ,y
follower in the next press, andt so on. lIt willV y A v' I be seen that one screwcan be utilized for any number of presses, and by means of the springlatches the Vfollowers can be held in position 95 Y yas long as'itis necessary to have the pressure .applied to the molds.
by again allowing the latches to engage with the ratehetteeth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a cigar-press, the combination, with the main frame, the top rail of which is4 provided with a T-shaped groove, of the castings D and E, rigidly secured to said frame and having the ratchet-teeth d and e, and the follower G, having spring-latches to engage with the said ratchet-teeth, substantially as specified. f
2. In a cigar-press, the combination, with the main frame, the top rail of which is provided with a T- shaped groove, of the screw F and nntf, adapted to slide in said T-shaped groove, substantially as specified.
3. In a cigar-press, the combination, with the main frame, the top rail of which is provided with a T-shaped groove, ofthe castings D and E, rigidly secured to said frame and having the ratchet-teeth d and e, the screw F and nutjQadapted to slidein the said T- shaped groove, and the follower G, having springlatehes adapted to engage with the teeth on the castings, substantially as specified.
4. In a cigar-press, the combination, with the main frame, the top rail of which is provided with a T-shaped groove, ofthe castings E, provided with ratchet-teeth and having slots at their upper ends, and the screw F and nut f, substantially as and for the pur'- pose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM PORTNER.
