Abstract
A device for use in association with aliquid fuel pumping apparatus includes a first lever for connection to a stop lever of the apparatus resilient means which loads the lever so that the stop lever cuts off the supply of fuel catch means operable to retain the lever against the action of the resilient means and means for releasing the lever to permit the resilient means to move the first lever and the stop lever to the position in which the supply of fuel is cut off.

1 FUEL PUMP ACTUATOR This invention relates to a device for use in association with a'liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus of the kind intended to supply fuel to an internal combustion engine, the apparatus having a quantity control lever by which the pumped quantity of fuel is varied and a stop lever which on movement to a predetermined position prevents the delivery of fuel by the apparatus. The device is intended to operate in conjunction with a vehicle security system such as a steering column lock and is arranged so that when the lock is moved to the locking position the device will actuate the stop lever of the apparatus.
According to the invention a device for use in association with an apparatusof the kind specified comprises a first pivotal lever for connection to said stop lever, resilient means loading the first lever in a direction so that the stop lever is urged to said predetermined position, catch means operable to retain said first lever against the action of the resilient means and means for. releasing said first lever to permit the resilient means to move the stop lever to said predetermined position.
One example of a device in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 2 is a plan view of the device of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a diagrammatic view of the device associated with a fuel pumping apparatus, and
FIG. 4 is a section to an enlarged scale on the line A-A of FIG. 2.
With reference to the drawing the device includes a rectangular casing having a base 11, side walls 12 and end walls 13. Extending between the side walls 12 is a pivot pin 14 about which are mounted first and second levers 15, 16. The levers are mounted upon bosses and the presented faces of the bosses are recessed and interengage with each other to define co-operable means as will be described. v I
The first lever 15 is provided with apertures to receive a pivot pin for a link which is connected to the stop control 15a of the associated pumping apparatus 9, three apertures being provided to enable the device to be used with different types of apparatus. In like mannerthe second lever 16 is provided with apertures whereby it can be connected to the quantity control lever 16a of the apparatus 9 and in addition to the operator controlled throttle 8 of the engine associated with the apparatus.
The first lever 15 is provided with resilient means in the form of a coiled tensionspring 17. The spring 17 urges the lever 15 and also the stop lever 15a of the apparatus to a predetermined position in which the supply of fuel by the apparatus is prevented. The lever 15 is also provided with a catch 18 pivotally mounted about a post 19, the catch having a head 20 engageablewith the lever 15. The catch is loaded out of engagement with the lever 15 by means of a coiled tension spring 21 and is movable against the action of the spring by means of an electromagnetic device 22. The device 22 is supplied with electric current when it is desired to start the engine of the vehicle in the normal way and also during normal running of the vehicle. Conveniently the supply circuit to the device includes a pair of contacts 22a operable in association with a steering column lock of the vehicle, the contacts being closed when the lock is in the unlocked position.
In normal operation the levers are in the position shown in FIG. 1 and the second lever can be moved in the clockwise direction by the throttle, without hinderance. When the column lock is locked the device 22 is de-energised and the catch 18 is moved by the spring 21 to release the first lever 15. The lever 15 under the action of the spring 17 moves to its alternative position and the stop lever is moved to halt the supply of fuel to the engine.
When it is required to operate the engine normally the device 22 is energised and the throttle fully depressed so that the lever 16 is moved in the clockwise direction. The effect of this is that a projection 23 con nected with the lever '16 engages with a projection 24 connected to the lever 15 to move the lever 15 in the clockwise direction to theposition in which it is shown and in this position the catch 18 re-engages with the lever. The engine can then be started normally.
In some instances it may be required to start the engine without the steering column lock being unlocked and this can still be done providing the throttle is depressed and held depressed.
It will be understood that the device 22 may be a mechanical device coupled to the steering column lock;
I claim:
1. A device for use in association with a liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus of the kind comprising a quantity control lever by which the pumped quantity of fuel is varied and a stop lever which on movement to a predetermined position prevents the delivery of fuel by the apparatus, the co-operable comprising a first pivotal lever for connection to said stop lever, resilient means loading the first lever in a direction so that the stop lever is urged to said predetermined position,
' catch means operable to retain said first lever against the action of the resilient means, means for releasing said catch means to permit the resilient means to move the stop lever to said predeterminedposition, a second lever for connection to said 'quantity control lever of the pumping apparatus, and co-operable means on the first and second levers, said co-operable means being arranged so that when said first lever is in the position corresponding to the stop lever being in said predetermined position, movement of said second lever will effect movement of the first lever to a position to be retainable by said catch means.
2. A device according to claim 1 including further resilient means loading said catch means in a direction to release said first lever to allow it to move under the action of said first mentioned resilient means and an electromagnetic device operable when energised to retain said catch means against the action of the further resilient means.
3. A device according to claim 1 in which said means for releasing the first lever comprises an operator actuable device.
4. A device according to claim 1 in which said cooperable means comprises opposed projections formed on apair of bosses respectively formed integrally with said levers and a pivot pin serving to mount the levers. l
Claims (4)
1. A device for use in association with a liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus of the kind comprising a quantity control lever by which the pumped quantity of fuel is varied and a stop lever which on movement to a predetermined position prevents the delivery of fuel by the apparatus, the device comprising a first pivotal lever for connection to said stop lever, resilient means loading the first lever in a direction so that the stop lever is urged to said predetermined position, catch means operable to retain said first lever against the action of the resilient means, means for releasing said catch means to permit the resilient means to move the stop lever to said predetermined position, a second lever for connection to said quantity control lever of the pumping apparatus, and co-operable means on the first and second levers, said co-operable means being arranged so that when said first lever is in the position corresponding to the stop lever being in said predetermined position, movement of said second lever will effect movement of the first lever to a position to be retainable by said catch means.
2. A device according to claim 1 including further resilient means loading said catch means in a direction to release said first lever to allow it to move under the action of said first mentioned resilient means and an electromagnetic device operable when energised to retain said catch means against the action of the further resilient means.
3. A device according to claim 1 in which said means for releasing the first lever comprises an operator actuable device.
4. A device according to claim 1 in which said co-operable means comprises opposed projections formed on a pair of bosses respectively formed integrally with said levers and a pivot pin serving to mount the levers.
