UNITED L STATES PATENT OFFI E;
WILLIAM H. 'G.ELLIS OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED UMBRELLA AND CANE.
SPECIFICATION forming arrot Letters'Patent No. 376,870, dated January 2 4,.1sas.
Application filed June 28, 1887.
To all whom it may concern; 7
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. G. ELLIs,
1 a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, iulthe county of Jefferson and State of make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined umbrella and cane; and it consists of a cane which can be readily and speedily transformed into an umbrella.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is h-a perspective view of my improvement as it appears when used asacane; Fig. 2,anenlarged vertical section of the smaller end of the same;
Fig. 3, a like section of the part between the handle and the staff of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of my improvement when in use as an umbrella; Fig. 5, an enlarged vertical section of the upper end of the same; Fig.
their relative positions when the umbrella is closed.
In the different figures like letters indicate like parts. 7 A is a tube forming the staff of the cane and the cover of the folded umbrella. Bis its handle, which is, screwedupon the tube A by means of the threaded sleeve 0, attached to B.
' D is its smaller end, and d is its ferrula' I moved for opening and folding the umbrella,
audit also serves as a guideto the tube A in transforming the cane into an umbrella.
Serial No. 142,716. (No model.)
serves as a stop orcheck to the lower and smaller joints of the'braces K. Four springs,
tances from each other, and prevent the thimble from slippingdownward when the umbrella is raised by clasping the tube A above the bead E. But two of thesprings are shown in the drawings.
His the sliding thimble, having a ring or 'band, h,'formed upon its upper portion,which I are the ribs of theumbrella, and m is a vertical section of one of them. The braces are formed of two parts, K the larger and K the smaller, so joined as to have the projection is of the larger part, K, extend beyond the joint. y isa vertical section of the larger part, K, of the braces. By makingthe braces in two parts the umbrella maybe folded very compactlyinside the cane,'asin'Fig. 3.
m are lugs fastened to the sides of the rod G, which bind it to the tube A when my imd of the cane, Fig. 8. In passing the rod- G into the tube A at the ferrule d thelugs m'pass through the slots n, and by turning the bandle B the lugs m strike the pins 0; This binds or locks the tube A and the rod G, with the umbrella-frame attached to it, together. a
.In practice, when it is desired to change the cane into an umbrella, the handle B is removed from the tube A by unscrewing it at the sleeve 0. The umbrella is withdrawn from the tube A by the thimble H, which proj ects beyond it, and the handle is then screwed upon thetub'e again. The umbrella is found to, be folded upon the rod G. It is-partially raised, and the lower end of the rod is pushed into the opening in the ferrule d of the tube 7 VA until the lugs in pass through the slots n.- A
This looks the thimble H in position. The umbrella is lowered by raising the ends of the 55 h, are. attached to the lower portion of the I thimble H. They are placed atequal dis-.
springs h over the bead E and pulling the thimble H toward the handle B; or four slots may be cut in the bead E, so that the springs will pass through them on giving the handle a slight turn. When the umbrella is partially raised, the upper portion of the tube A and the beads F and E are readily passed through the thimble H in changing the cane into an umbrella. When the umbrella-is fully raised, the projections k of thelargerpart, K,of the braces pass the bead E, but strike the bead E, which is larger than E, and prevent the thimble H from slipping farther upward and the umbrella from turning inside out.
To transform the umbrella into a cane, the process is reversed. It is partially lowered and the handle B'is given a twist or turn in the opposite direction from that mentioned above, which moves the lugs m, so that they pass through the slots n and release the tube A from the umbrella frame, which is withdrawn from the tube. Theumbrella is folded about the rod G and passed into the tube after the handle Bis detached. The operation is completed by screwing the handle upon the tube.
My invention can be cheaply made, and by shaping the ribs and braces as shown in Fig. 9 it forms a combined umbrella and cane that is light and compact, and has all the advantages of both.
It is obvious that my invention is applicable to parasols as well as umbrellas.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined umbrella and cane, the combination of the tube A, the handle B, the sleeve 0, the beads E and F, the rod G, the thimble H, the T-shaped ribs I, the jointed and grooved braces K K, and the top catch consisting of the lugs m, the slots n, and the pins 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined umbrella and cane, the combination of the beads E and F, the thimble H, the T-shaped ribs I, the j ointed and grooved braces K K, and the top catch consisting of the lugs m, the slots 7, and the pins 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a combined umbrella and cane, the combination of the tube A, the handle B, the sleeve 0, the beads E and F, and the thimble H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a combined umbrella and cane, the combination of the tube A, the handle B, the sleeve 0, the T-shaped ribs I, and the jointed and grooved braces K K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatu rein presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM II. G. ELLIS.
