FOLDING UMBRELLA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTIE R. WVARD, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Leesville, in the parish of Vernon and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and use ful Folding Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding umbrellas.
The primary object of the said invention is to provide an umbrella of the folding type which will be simple in construction, economical to manufacture and which may be readily and conveniently folded.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device, that the umbrella cover may be secured to the frame in a simple and convenient manner.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a view showing the umbrella extended. Fig. 2 is a view of the same folded, and Fig. 3 is a detail .view of the hinge. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the manner of securing the cover to the ribs.
In the drawings 10 and 11 designate the sections which form the rod or staff. Each of these sections consists of a rod 12 around which a wire 13 is coiled, said wire terminating adjacent the ends of the rods in loops 14, the loops of the two sections being connected. The rod 10 is provided adjacent its end with a knob 15 which limits the movement of a sleeve 16, said sleeve as shown in Fig. 1 being arranged to lock the sections in an extended position, the sleeve inclosing the connected loops of the two sections. Arranged adjacent the end of the section 11 is a head 16 which supports a plurality of ribs 17, the ribs 17 being connected to a suitable runner 18 by a plurality of ribs 19. Each of the ribs 17 are looped at a point adjacent their ends, the loops or coils 20 thus formed receiving and pivotally supporting a rib 21. This rib 21 is bent upon itself to form the loop 22 as shown in Fig. 4, the extreme end 23 of the rib being again bent to embrace the body portion of the rib, the portion of the rib adjacent the end portion 23 being pressed inwardly at the point 24.
It will be noted by this construction that the staff may be conveniently folded the sections 10 and 11 readily folding. WVhen the ribs are in their extended position as shown in Fig. 1, the end portion of the rib 17 rests within the loop 22 of the rib 20, said end portion lying parallel with said rib. It will Specification of Letters Patent.

be noted that the end portion of the rib 17 when inserted within the loop will be forced between the projection 24 and the body portion of the rib, thus preventing the accidental displacement of the rib. All of the ribs are formed of wire which permits of a ready and convenient attachment of the same to the head 16 and the runner 18. It will be noted by constructing the ribs of wire, the joint between the ribs 17 and 19 may be conveniently made, attention being called to the fact that the peculiar formation of this joint forms a simple and convenient means for locking the ribs 17 and 19 together.
The cover 25 of the umbrella is provided with the usual promet, 26, through which the extended portion of the staff section 11 is inserted, the cover resting upon the head 16 and being held in contact with said head by a retaining cap 27. The cover 25 is secured to the ribs 17 by the wire loops 17 and to the ribs 21 at a point intermediate their ends by the wire loops 20. The end portions of the ribs 20 are bent to form loops 28 which receive a third loop carried by the umbrella cover, this third loop is not attached to the rib in the same manner as the loops 20 and 17, the loop which is secured to the cover being passed through the loop formed on the rib 20 its end portions being joined together at 29, the perforated beads 30 being interposed between the connected end portions of the loop which is carried by the cover and the loop which is formed on the end of the rib 20. Particular attention is called to the fact that by this construction, the cover may be readily and conveniently attached to the ribs without the aid of stitching.
Attention is called to the fact that the various parts of the device may be quickly and conveniently assembled, the formation of said parts being such as to produce an extremely light article, which owing to its lightness may be easily and conveniently carried when either in its folded or unfolded position. Particular attention is called to the connection between the ribs 17 and 20 which permit the ribs to be quickly yet securely held in an extended position, the joints being formed by bending the end portions of the ribs and without the assistance of either a pivot pin or catch.
It will be noted by referring to Fig. 2 that the construction is such that the umouter series being looped about a rib of the inner series, its terminal being adapted to lie parallel with said inner rib and under said latch member when the ribs are in their extended positions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature 20 in the presence of two witnesses.
