Be it known that I, Biron AnoLrH NYGREN, a citizen of the United States residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Folding -Uinbrellas; and l do hereby declare thev folend,it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices, hereinafter de-V scribed and dened in the claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views. i,

An annular cap 12 having depending peripheral hinge .lugs 13 is detachably and rigidly secured to the outer end of the cane section 3 by means of a screw bolt-14. Folding cover supporting ribs are pivotallyconnected near their inner ends to the hinge lugs 13. As best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, these cover supporting ribs are each niade up of an inner section 15, an intermediate section 16, and an outer section 17. The inner and intermediate sections 15 and 16 are connected by hinged joints 18, arranged to permit the rib sections 16 to be folded inward onto the rib sections 15, as best shown in Fig. 2. Slidably mounted on the cane section 3 is a collar 27 having a notched and-grooved periphery. Links 28 have their inner ends lseated in the notches of the collar 27, and are pivotally attached thereto by means of a wire band-29 seated in the groove of the collar.. The outer ends of the links 28 are pivotally attached to the intermediate poi14 tions of the inner sections of the stay rods 24. A head block 3() is slidably mounted on the cane section 2. Slidably mounted in perforations in the flange 23 is a pair 'of rods 81 rigidly secured at their upper ends to the sliding collar 27, and rigidly secured at their lower ends to the head bloei: 30. A spring pressed latch 32 is pivotally mounted on the head block 30 and is adapted to engage' thc flange 23 to hold the head block 30 interlocked with the cam section 2 lwhen the i umbrella is folded.

Stop flange 33 is spaced below the cap 12 and rigidly secured to the cane section 3. Slidably mounted on the cane section 3 between the cap 12 and the stop flange 33, is a sleeve 34.- terminating at its lower end in an outwardly extended flange 35, having a notched and grooved periphery, similar to the flange 23 and collar 27. The inner ends of the rib sections 15, beyond their pivotal connections are curved inward and downward and are provided with segmental slots 36. The slotted ends of the rib sections 15 are mounted in the notches of the flange 85 and are loosely secured thereto by means of a wire band 37, mounted in the groove of said flange. rhese slotted ends of the rib sections 15 are adapted to engage the stop flange and limit the opening movements of the rib sections 15. Surrounding the sleeve fill is a coiled spring 38 compressed r between vthe cap 12 and the flange 3o, tending to hold the rib sections in engagement with said stop flange 33. A transversely extended pin 39 is rigidly secured to the sleeve 34; and works vertically in a pair of' diametrically opposite slots l0 formed in the cane section 3.

'lhe operation of the improved umbrella may be briefi y stated as follows :-Normally, the spring latches 6 and 9 hold the sections olf the cane in their extended or operative positions, and the stay rods 2li and spring 38 hold the cover supporting ribs in their open positions.

After the head block 30 has been locked to the flange 23, the cam head 7 is pressed inward by the thumb and, at the same time, the cane section l is forced inward, thereby -camming the head 7 out of the slot 8. Continuing the movement of the cane section 1, the inner end thereof engages thecam head 9 and forces the same outward into a position to be engaged by the inward movement of the, cane section 2 and, thereby, forced cbmpletely out of the slot 11. The cane sections l and 2 are of substantially the same length and the continued inward movement of the cane sectio-n 1 carries therewith, by.

Duringl the final inward movements of the cane sections 1 and 2, the cross pin 39 is engaged thereby and the connected sleeve 34- moved against the tension of the spring 38. This final movement of the cane sections l and 2 completes the folding move- 2. An umbrella comprising a cane, a cap,

and a stop flange spaced apart and secured to said cane, cover supporting ribs pivotally connected to said cap, a sleeve slidably mounted on said cane between said cap and stop flange and connected to said ribs inward of their pivotal connections, and a spring compressed between said cap and sleeve, tending to hold said ribs extended and in engagement with said stop flange.

In a folding umbrella, the combination with a sectional cane, of cover support-innribs made up of inner, intermediate and outer sections pivotaliy connected, said inner sections being pivotally connected to said cane, said intermediate sections arranged to be folded outward onto said inner sections, said outer sections arranged to be 'j folded inward onto said intermediate sections, folding stay rods pivotally connecting said intermediate 'rib sections and said cane, extensions on said outer sections for holding the same below dead centers, and a cover otnlly connected to said cane, a sliding sleevel messes stretched over said ribs tending to pull the free ends of said outer ribs downward.
