UNITED STATES PATENT QFrIcE.
CHARLES P. HAWLEY, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED SCISSORS AND FILE.
QPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,596, dated January 17, 1888.
Application filed May 5, 1887. Serial No. 237,222. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .CHARLES P. HAWLEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Scissors and File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combination toilet implement, and has for its object to provide a combination of devicessuch as a pair of scissors and filewherein each'will be perfect in itself and as strong and useful as they would be if made separately, and wherein when the articles are hinged together they may be conveniently carried in the vest-pocket.
The invention consists in the combination of the scissors and file and in the mode of attachment, and also in the construction of the file, wherein the spring-forms an integral portion thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 illustrates the file opened out from' the scissors in positive lines and closed parallel with theisaid scissorsin dotted lines; and
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device illustrat ing in positive lines the file as partly opened and in dotted lines the said file as fully opened.
In carrying out the invention, the principal design of which is to produce a convenient toilet article, any form of the ordinary nailscissors, A, is employed, and to the rear portion of the eye 1), adapted to receive thethu nib, a nail-file, B, is attached, to project preferably at a slight inclination outward.
The file B may be made an integral and rigid portion of the scissors, orhinged thereto, as illustrated in Fig. 1. In the latter event a right-angular lug, a, is provided on the afore: said rear portion of the eye I), as shown in Fig. 2, whereby a shoulder, d, is formed. The file B is split horizontally from one end to about its center, so as to form two. portions, e and e. The portion 0- is bent upon itself to form an eye, by which said file is hinged to the shoulder (Z, and the other portion, e, acts as a spring against said shoulder to hold the file closed or partially or-wholly opened. When the file is closed, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, the portion 6 bears against one side of the shoulder d. When itis partially open, said portion 6 bears against the under side of said shoulder, as shown in positive lines in Fig. 2, and when said file isfully open the portion e bears against the other side of said shoulder and upon the lug a, as shown in positive lines in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In the construction shown the portion 6 has a slot or recess at f, as shown in Fig. 1, to permitthe passage of the lug (b when the file is adjusted from its closed to its open position.
When the scissorsare in use, the file will extend along the thumb toward the wrist and be entirely out of the way. If desirable, the file may be attached to the other eye, I), to accommodate left-handed persons.
.It will be observed that both implements the scissors and file-are invariably used in dressing the nails of the hand or foot. Therefore, when combined as above, they are in immediate hand for use.
Having thus fully described my invention,l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a pair of scissors, of a file attached to the thumb-ring thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a pair of scissors, of a file hinged thereto adapted to fold out therefrom and parallel therewith, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a pair of scissors, of a spring-actuated file hinged to the thumbring thereof, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with a pair of scissors, of a file hinged thereto'provided with an integral spring, whereby said file is retained in given positions, substantially as shown and described. v
5. A nail-file, B, split at one end to form the hinge portion 6 and spring 6, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.
CHARLES r. HAWLEY.
