GILBERT D. SIDWAY, OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI.
BANANA-'CARRI ER.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,555, dated January 17, 1888.
Aprilia-anon mea July 18,1887. serial No. 214,668. (No model.)
,To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GILBERT D. SIDWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson,- county of Hinds, State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Oase for Oarrying Bananas and SimilarFruit, of which the follow-ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof..
My invention relates to a case for the carrying and handling ot' bananas which will protect them from injury and enable them to be more easily handled, stored, and transport-ed than they now are.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view; Fig. 2 a perspective view, and Fig. 3 a plan view ofa modification.
I attain these objects by placing the buttend or shank of the banana-stalk in a V- shaped slot, B, made in a board, A. This board may be of one piece, with the slot cut in it, or it may be of two pieces so placed as to leave a V-shaped opening between them. This board A forms the top ofthe ease.- The bottom of the case is a similar board, C, without the slot or opening. The sides of the case are made by slats E of the proper length to hold the bunch of Afruit and of sufiicient strength to support its weight when it is hanging downward from the slot in the top board, A, as the case is set on end.
The end of the bananasstalkis placed in the slot and forced as far as it will go toward the narrower end of the slot. This will hold up the banana-bunch as long as it stays caughtin the converging end of the slot. To secure it from slipping to the wider. end of the slot a key, D, shaped like a triangle, (almost any shape will answer for a key,) is nailed or otherwise fastened to the top of A, but so loosely that one end of it can be moved across the V- shaped slot. After pressing it (thekey) irmly against the banana-stalk from the broad end of the slot it is secured there by a nail, or in some other firm manner. This key D may be inadein the shape of a half-eccentric wheel and used as above stated.
The oase containing the bananabunches may now be stood up on end and packed in cars, wagons, or warehouses, Ste., and carried v about without bruising or blemishing the fruit, so producing black and rotten spots and spoil ing its sale.
One or more of these cases may be made in combination for carrying more than one bunch at a time.
I claim and ask Letters Patent fory A bananacase made with the top board, A, with the V-snaped slot or opening B, the bottom board, O, side boards, E,'and the key D, to be used for carrying bananas and similar fruit, substantially as above set forth.
G. D. SIDVAY.
