UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO SAMUEL WESLEY HURLBURT, OF ORESTON, IOWA.
VENTILATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,094, dated January 10, 1888. Application filed October 4, 1887. Serial No. 251,460. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, SAMUEL YVESLEY, HURL- BURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oreston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilation, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ventilators for use in connection with mattresses, pillows, bolsters, and analogous articles; and it consists in the construction, and arrangement of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter -described, and
ment shown in connection therewith. Fig. 2
is a similar view of a pillow with my improvement in'connection therewith. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of my improved device.
A indicates a central perforated reservoir,
preferably rubber, which is constructed of such a size as will produce the most beneficial and necessary results, and proportionately to thearticle with which it is mounted. To the sides of this reservoir A tubes B are secured, which are formed with perforations Z), and which project outwardly through the article in which the device ismounted through the sides thereof, and suitable disks, 1), of bone or other material, are secured on the said outer ends of said tubes, so that the air may readily enter the said tubes. As the reservoir A is compressed by the weight thereupon and allowed to expand by the movement of the weight, the air will be drawn inward through the tubes or pipes B, and, passing through the apertures b, a circulation of air within the mattress, pillow, or bolster is established. The normal condition of thepipes and reservoir, however, will permit the entrance of air therethrough, and purification and healthfulness will necessarily be the ultimatum of the use of my improvement.
Heretofore it has occasioned considerable trouble and inconvenience to cleanse and purify mattresses, pillows, bolsters and analogous articles, and at best the purification was only partially successful.
By my improvement a continuous circulation of air is established, and the result greatly beneficial to healthful sleep.
The utility of my device being obviously apparent, it is unnecessary to further enlarge uponthe same. .7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is l. A mattress, pillow, bolster, or other analogous article provided with a ventilator consisting of a series of perforated ventilatingtubes having their outer ends accessibly arranged relatively to the surrounding air and connected at their inner ends with a common interiorly-situated and perforated reservoir of elastic material, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a mattress, of the central expansible perforated reservoir, A, the tubes B, projecting laterally therefrom and provided with perforations b, the outer ends of said tubes projecting outside of the mattress, and disks b, surrounding the outerends of said tubes Bto keep them outside of the mattress, substantially as described.
3. In a mattress, bolster, pillow, or other analogous article, an expansible and retractible ventilatingframe arranged interiorly and consisting of a perforated reservoir, and one or more perforated tubes having their inner ends connected to the perforated reservoir and their outer ends projecting outside the mattress, bolster, pillow, or the like, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as,
SAMUEL WESLEY HURLBURT,
Witnesses:
J. R'BRINK, I. 'I. HORTON.
