Description
E. PENNINGTON.
BEDSTEAD ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, l9l8.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
gwvaufoz EDI ETH TENmNqToN EDIVEETH PENNINGTON, or PEQUOT, MINNESOTA.
Application fi1ed-.May 29, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDIETI-I PENNINGTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pequot, in the county of Crow Wing and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bedstead attachments and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved attachment adapted to be detachably secured to the head portion of a bed to protect the occupant against draft.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved bedstead attachment whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the coacting head piece being indicated by dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through my improved attachment as herein disclosed in applied position, and
Fig. 3 is a View in perspective of my improved attachment as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings H denotes the head piece of a. bedstead of an open-work type and which includes a lower cross piece 1 and vertically disposed bars or members 2.
My improved attachment comprises an imperforate flat plate or body B of a length substantially equal to the length of the head piece H and which is of a width to terminate adjacent the upper margin of the head piece. If preferred, however, the plate or body B may be of such a width as to have its upper marginal portion, when the plate or body is BEDSTEAD ATTACHMENT.

in applied position, terminate below the head piece H.
The plate or body 3 adjacent its opposite ends is provided with the inwardly directed spring clips 3 adapted to frictionally engage certain of the members or bars 2 to maintain the body or plate in applied position.
The lower marginal portion of the plate or body B is provided with the inwardly di rected flange 4 substantially at right-angles to the body or plate and which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the cross piece 1. The outer longitudinal marginal portion of the flange 4 is provided with a depending flange 5 adapted to overlie the inner face of the cross piece 1. It is to be noted that the opposite ends of the flanges 4 and 5 terminate a predetermined distance inwardly of the ends of the plate or body B so that the flange 4 may be properly rested upon the cross piece 1.
My invention as herein disclosed is particularly well adapted for use with that type of iron beds generally employed in hospitals and when my attachment is in applied position upon the head piece of a bed, it will at once be self-evident that the occupant of the bed, when in either a lying or sitting posture is effectively protected against draft.
When not in use, my improved attachment may be laid upon the bed for use as a table for feeding purposes or the like.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a bedstead attachment constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with an open-work head piece of a bedstead including a lower cross piece and vertically disposed members, a
body adapted to be disposed across the head flange adapted to overlie the vertical face piece, and members carried by the body for of the lower cross piece. 10 detachable connection with the vertically In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my disposed members, the lower marginal porsignature in the presence of two witnesses.
5 tion of the body being provided with a EDIETH PENNINGTON.
flange adapted to rest upon the lower cross Witnesses: piece, the outer marginal portion of said GEO. PEN INGTON, flange being provided with a depending BENANDERsoN;
Copies of this patent may be obtained for live cents each, addressing the commissioner of ratents,
