BURNISHING- MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION" forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,045, dated January 3, 1888. Application filed April 5, 1887. Serial No. 233,731. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY F. RODNEY, a eitizen'of the United States, and aresi'dent of Randolph, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Makers BurnishingMachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of as much of a machine for burnishing the edges of the soles and heels of shoes or boots as will illustrate my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the burnishing device.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

My invention relates to machines for burnishing the edges of the soles of boots and shoes; and it consists in the improved construction of such a device whereby the use of steam for heating the samc is rendered more satisfactory and efficient, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the shaft upon which the holder and tools are secured, and the holder 2 is secured with a bore upon the shaft in the usual manner, and is formed with a hollow portion, 3, projecting from the portion 4, se cured to the shaft and occupying slightly more than one-fourth of the circumference ofthe central part or sleeve. This hollow portion is provided with radially-projecting studs 5, projecting at right angles to each other, and the burnishing-tools 6 are secured to these studs in the usual manner, springs 7 engaging notches 8 in the tools, and studs 9 engaging notches 10 in the bored-out ends of the tools,being shown in the drawings, al-

, though of course any suitable fastening for the tools may be used, as I do not. wish to make any claims for the fastening, and do not wish to confine myself to any specific form of fastening. from the radiating shoulders 12 of the hollow portion, and a flexible inlet or feed tube, 13, and a similar outlet or exhaust tube, 14:, have their ends secured upon these nipples and extend, respectively, from a live-steam pipe and an exhaust pipe, steam being thus fed into the hollow chamber from one side and exhausted at the other, so that the steam in passing through the hollow portion may heat the same, and through it heat the tools.

In operation the holder is secured upon the machine in the usual manner, such machine being of any ordinary construction and form- Short pipes or nipples 11 project v ing no part of the invention, and therefore i not being shown. By securing the tools upon the holder at right angles to. each other, instead of at opposite points upon it, a change from the one to the other can be made more quickly and the danger of twisting and tangling the pipes is avoided, which would have a tendency to obstruct the free passage of the steam through them, and thus prevent the heating of the tools.

Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- In a machine for burnishing the edges of the soles and heels of boots and shoes, the combination of a holder, 2, having a hollow. segmental portion projecting from one side, the

. ends of which form shoulders, said portion extending slightly more than one-fourth of the surface of the central portion or sleeve of said holder, and having studs 5 projecting radially at right angles to each other, burnishing-tools secured upon said studs, and short pipes or nipples 11 through said shoulders, and flexible tubes secured to the nipples for admitting and exhausting steam from theirinterior, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
