UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK WILLIAM COY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE H. P. FLAGG, TRUSTEE, OF SAME PLACE.
TROLL FOR- POLISHING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,227, dated N ovmber 9,1886.
Application filed April 19. 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM COY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and a State of Massachusetts, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in Rolls for Polishing- Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 an end View, of a roll embodying my invention.
My invention is an improvement on the roll described in my Patent No. 247,171, granted September 20,1881; and it consists ina roll having a fibrous surface, in combination with lallli outer sheath or covering of leather, or the 1 e. i
In the drawings, the roll-A consists of a series of 'felt disks arranged together and secured on a shaft or arbor, substantially as described in my patent above mentioned, together with the outer covering or sheath, D,
, of leather or like material, which is drawn over the roll of felt disks.- The ends of sheath 1) are turned inwardly (see Fig. 1) and secured by stitches to the annular disksC C, preferably of leather, which are held in place by rings 72 b, tightly fitting the necks of metal disks B B.
0 The object of my invention is to protect'the Serial No. 58,795.' (No model.)
fibrous surface of the roll from wear, and to prevent its fibers from being thrown out by centrifugal force when the roll is used.
In practical operation of the kind set forth in my patent above mentioned these rolls make over three thousand revolutions per minute, and have been found to be possessed of pecu liar advantages; but I have found by practical use that rolls whose surfaces are of fibrous material last much longer "when sheathed in leather or like material than when used without such covering, and at the same time work April 28, 1869, to Randolph; No. 254,811,
March 14, 1882, to Flagg; No. 85,538, Januis described in them.
WVhatI claim is I In combination with roll A, having a fibrous surface or cushion, sheath D and disks 0 C,
ary 5, 1869, to Sawyer, and disclaim all that arranged and secured together, substantially as and'for the purpose set forth.
FREDK. WILLIAM COY.
