UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE E. BURGESS, OF HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WALDO B. BRIGHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVE MENT IN BURNlSHlNG-MACHINES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175.332, dated March 28, 1876; application filed March 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BURGESS, of Hudson, in thecounty of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Burnishing-Machine, of which the'tollowing is a specification My invention consists of a rotary burnishing-tool, constructed in conical form to fit the beveled shape of the edges of shoe shanks, and having a head which fits the upper edge, and at the same time constitutes a guide, by which to aid the operatorin applying the shoe to the tool; and the invention also consists of a friction-pad combined with the tool, to alford the heat necessary to the efficient action of the tool. 1
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of myimproved burnishing-nlachine; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicatec0rresponding parts.
Ais aspindle, Working in suitable bearings B by a belt and pulleys, U D, in one end of which is a burnishing-tool, E, having the conical shape F, for fitting the beveled edges of shoe-shanks, and alsohaving the head G, for burnishing the upper corners of the edges, and for a guide to the shoe in running along H is a friction-pad for heating the tool. 1 is a spring, and J an adjusting-screw for regulating the pressure of the pad on the tool.
Commonly the edges of the shanks are burnished by a hand-tool which is heated over a lamp, and is liable to be overheated and burn the upper of the shoe, or, if underheated, will not properly do the work. It cannot, in any case, finish the upper corner as the head of this bnrnisher ddes, is sometimes prevented from finishing the shank up to the heel by the shape of the latter, and, at the best, is very laborious to use, and requires too much time. This tool does the' work much better and more uniformly, takes less time, and does the work much easier for the attendant, who only holds the shoe to the tool, Whereas, in the other case, a special holder has to be provided for the shoe, and the tool has to be worked by hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The rotary burnisher, having the conical shape F and the head G, combined and arranged substantially as specified 2. The combination of a friction-pad with a rotary burnisher, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of pad H, spring I, and adjusting-screw J, substantially as specified.
GEORGE E. BURGESS.
