Description

(No Modelf) v A. C. MILLARD.
COMBINED CLOTHES RACK AND IRONING BOARD.
No, 376,039. Patented Jan. 3, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS C. MILL/AED, OF GOUDERSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO ALBERT A. ALLEN, O F SAME PLACE.
COMBINED CLOTHES-RACK AND IRONING-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,039, dated'January 3, 1888.
Application tiled September 23. 1836. Serial No. 214.336. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS C. MILLAED,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Goudersport, inthe county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined ClothesRack and Ironing-Board; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
io such as will ,enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification. My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined clothesdriers andironing-boards, the object of my invention being to provide a cheap and convenient arti- 2o cle of laundry furniture, which can, when not in use, be folded, so as to occupy but little space.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved clothes-drier and ironing-board, showing the parts arranged in position for use; and Fig. 2 is a View showing t-he parts folded upon each other. l
A refers to a central standard or support, 3o which is provided at its base with feet a a.
At suitable intervals the standard A has rigidly secured thereto seniicircular Aplates B, which are centrally recessed so as to embrace three of the edges of the standard to which they are secured by any suitable means. These semicircular platesB are provided at suitable intervals with outwardly-projecting eyes b b, to which are pivotally attached, by means of bolts b', arms or bars C, the outer ends thereof 4o being pivotally connected to vertical bars D,-
the lower. ends of which are adapted to rest upon the floor when the clothes-rack is unfolded, so that the arms C will assume a horizontal position. The clothes rack. as shown, is adapted to be folded so as to occupy but little horizontal space, and when the parts are in position for use each of the vertical bars D will tend to brace the central standard, B, so as to prevent any movement of the same.
The standard B ata suitable distance above the base has attached thereto a transverse bracket, E, which is provided with a hinge which is attached to the inner under edge of the ironing-board F,.so that when said ironing-board is folded in a vertical position the 5 5 lower edge thereof will rest upon the upper edge of the bracket E, so that said bracket will receive the whole weight of the board. Below the lower semicircular plate, B, the standard A has an outwardly-projecting eye, 6o c, to which is pivoted the inner end of a bracebar, G, the opposite end of said brace-bar being attachedto a frame, H, which frame is adapted to support the outer end of the ironing-board. Thisframe is held in a vertical position when in use by a brace-rod, g, which l is pivoted, near the upper end of the same and at a point near the inner end of the bar G, to antupwardly-projecting eye, g.
Vhen it iS desired to fold the support PI 7c d against the standard, one of the bolts on the end of the bar g is removed, so as to permit the support PI, when elevated, to assume a vertical position. e
Iam aware that prior to my invention it 7AJ has been proposed to provide clothes-racks which are adapted to fold upwardly, so as to Voccupy but a small horizontal space; also, that it is not broadly new to hinge one end of an ironing-,board to a support. Therefore I do not 8o claim such construction, broadly; but
Whatlclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf In combination with a folding'clothesrack having a vertically-supported central bar, A, substantially as Shown, a transverse bracket, E, attached to the standard and provided with hinges for attaching an ironingboard thereto, so as to fold upwardly and rest upon the upper edge of the bracket, a bar, G, pivotally at- 9o tached to the central bar, a brace-rod, g, pivoted to the bar G near its inner end, a support, II, connected pivot-all y to the bar G and detachably to the rod g, the parts being organized so that the ironing board may be 9 5 raised when the support H is in a vertical po-Y sition without raising said support and so that the board and support may be folded parallel with the standard, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS C. MILLARD. Witnesses:
