BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Disc phonograph records are normally provided with two sides which are individually played. These records are usually supplied in rectangular envelopes in which they are stored when not in use. There have been instances in which the words of the music are printed on the cover of the envelope. However, printing in this manner is necessarily of very reduced size in view of the small size of the envelope. Furthermore, it is usually impractical to provide illustrations of any substantial size on the envelope due to the space restrictions.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is my desire to produce records particularly intended for small children which would not only provide an audible tune, but would also provide a book which would recite the words being sung, and also illustrate the song. In view of the fact that each side of the record provides a different story, two different books or pages of words are required. Rather than to mount these books in tandum, as would be the usual practice, I prefer to mount the books in back-to-back relation, and to use the back covers of the two books to form a pocket design to contain the record. When the record is removed from the pocket and placed upon the phonograph in one direction, one story may be read. By reversing the book, and placing the opposite side of the record on the phonograph, the other story may be read. The purpose of the arrangement is educational so that the child may listen to the record and see the printing and illustrations, thereby teaching the child to associate the words printed with the words heard on the record, and to also associate the illustrations with the words being played on the records so as to familiarize the child with different objects and different words.
A feature of the present invention resides in the provision of two booklets of similar size, each having a front and rear cover, and a series of intermediate pages. The rear covers of the two booklets are die cut to provide a pocket for receiving a phonograph disc, the words of which are similar to the words in the book. In other words, one side of the record contains the words disclosed in one book, wyile the other side of the record describes the words in the other book.
A further feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a device of the type described in which the record is protected from damage by being enclosed between the two booklets. I
These and other objects and novel features of the present invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.
f BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the book in its assembled form.
FIG. 2 is a top plan view showing the book in one of its forms with the record removed.
FIG. 3 is a view similar. to FIG. 2 showing the books in another of its assembled forms with the record removed. I i
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the book shown in FIG: 3 with the sides thereof folded outwardly from the central record containing compartment and pages I9"omitted.
FIG. 5 is a diagrammatic view of the innerc'overonly of one hood of the duplex book.
FIG. 6 is a view of the inner coveronly of'th 'second book of the duplex book. 1
As indicated in the drawings, the duplex book includes an outer cover 10 and an inner cover 11 which are connected along a fold line 12. A series of pages 13 are supported between the covers 10 and 11, and are held in place by staples 14, or by other suitable means.
A second book includes an outer cover 15, and an inner cover 16 which is connected to the outer cover 15 along a fold line such as 17. A series of pages 19 are provided between the cover members 15 and 16, and are held in place by the staples l8. i
The inner covers 11 and 16 are die cut to provide a support for a disc record 20 in the manner illustrated in FIG. 4 of the drawings. As an example, the inner cover 16 may be provided with a generally rectangular notch 21 which includes a pair of flaps 22 extending inwardly from opposite edges thereof, and a flap 23 extending upwardly from the lower edge of the notch. The covers 11 and 16 are secured in face contact by areas of adheseve extending along the sides and bottom of the rectangular notch, the flaps being free of adhesion. These flaps 22 and 23 are designed to hold the re cord 20 against the the inner cover panel 11. The upper edge of the inner cover panel 11 is provided with a rounded notch 25 which is designed to provide a means of access to the record 20.
In the arrangement illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawings, the cover panels 11 and 16 are secured in face contact with the inner cover panels 16 of one booklet being secured between the panels 10 and 11 of the other booklet. In the arrangement illustrated in FIG. 3 of the drawings, the rear covers 11 and 16 are secured in back-to-back relation as indicated in FIG. 3. In either event, a pocket is formed between the two inner covers 11 and 16 so as to accommodate the record 20.
The booklet which is located on one side of the center partition is designed to describe and illustrate the subject matter of one side of the record while the booklet on the other side of the central partition is designed to describe the subject matter on the other side of the record. The book is designed to open up in a normal manner as illustrated in FIG. 1 so that either of the booklets may be readily read and may be opened up in the usual manner.
In accordance with the Patent Office Statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my improvement in DUPLEX BOOK; and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that changes may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
