UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRIST CLAUDY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR ONE HALF TO AUGUST J. SEILER, OF SAME PLACE.
WINDOW ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,341, dated December 27, 1887.
Application filed June 6, 1887. Serial No. 240,373. (No model.)
Improvements in Window Attachments, of
which the following is a specification.
The several features of my invention and the advantages arising from their use, conjointly or otherwise, will be apparent from to the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front view of a window provided with my improvements, the front-edge strip being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a window provided with my improvements, the sashes being swung out. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the box and swinging arm for attachment to the inside sash. Fig. 4is a perspective view of the box and swinging arm for attachment to the outer sash. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the part attached to the window-frame. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the back of the device illustrated in Fig. 4.
The device shown in Fig. 4 consists of a box, A, open at the back, and having journaled in it the arm B. The front face of the box A is provided with the opening a, through The arm B is provided at its free end with the journalpin b, and also, preferably, with a knob or similar devicc,.b'. The other end of the arm B is fashioned into the head 6 which is pref- 5 erably square. The spring 0 is attached to g the back of the box A, and has its free end bearing against the square head b of the arm B. The spring 0 tends to hold the arm B in position, either open or closed, after the man- 0. ner of a knife-spring.
The device shown in Fig. 3 is similar in all essential particulars to that shown in Fig. 4, except that it is preferably smaller in size. The preferred forms of boxes to be used in these devices are those shown in the drawings.
The device shown in Fig. 5 consists of a double box, D D, open at the rear, andhaving the openings (2 d in front, one for each compartment of the box. The arm E is journaled in the box D in such manner that it may be swung in and out of the opening. The outer end of the arm E is provided with the opening 6. The arm E is similarly journaled in the compartment D, and is provided with the opening 6. The arm E is preferably longer than the arm E, for reasons which will appear hereinafter.
The sashes F and G are hung on cords, in the usual manner, except that the cords are attached to the sashes in such a manner as to be readily detached therefrom. The preferred means for accomplishing this is that illustrated in Fig. 2, where the sashes are shown provided with the countersunk hooks K, and each of the cords H with a ring, h. The cords H, when detached from the sashes, may be held by catching the rings h over the hook h, placed in the strip between the sash-grooves. The side strips, L, forming the outer boundaries of the grooves for the inner sash, are hinged to the window-frame in such manner that they may be opened inwardly to permit the inner sash to be removed from the frame.
The device shown in Fig. 3is secured to the front face of the inner sash G, near the edge, on one side only of the sash. It is covered by the strip L when the latter is closed. The sash has one of these devices near its top and one near the bottom, both being set into the sash-frame, so as to be flush with the surface when the arms B are closed. The outer sash G is similarly provided with two of the devices shown in Fig. 4-that is, the one having the long arms B..
Two of the devices shown in Fig. 5 are set into the window-frame under the strip L, preferably toward the bottom of the frame, and the same distance apart as the co-operating devices on the sashes.
The strip between the sash-grooves on the side of the frame opposite to that in which the hinge devices are set is made in two parts, the lower part, m, being arranged in any manner permitting its easy removal.
The mode of operation of the device is as follows: The strips L are first turned out and the sash G raised slightly. The arms E are next turned out, and then the arms B from the sash G. The sash G is now lowered and the pins Z) fit in the openings 6 of the arms E.
The sash-cords are now detached and sash swung inward on the hinges formed by the arms B and E, as shown in Fig. 2. Vith the strip m removed, the sash F may be similarly swung into the room, the longer arms B and E enabling it to swing clear of the sash G.
The special advantages of my device lie in its applicability to any window having sliding sashes, and in the use of a solid sash which is bodily swung from the frame. The arrangement is also cheap of manufacture and simple in construction.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a windowsash pro vided with a box having an extensible arm pivoted therein, the said arm being provided with a pin at its end, and a window-frame provided with a box havingan extensible arm pivoted therein, the said arm being provided with an opening to receive the pin of the other arm, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of a window-sash provided with a box having an extensible arm pivoted therein, anda window-frame provided with a box having an extensible arm pivoted therein, the two arms being provided with means for forming together a hinge-joint, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of box A, provided with opening a, arm B, journalcd in box A, and adapted to project through opening a,and provided with pin b near its free end, and angular head b and spring 0, bearing against angular head I), and box D, provided with opening d, and arm E, journaled in box D, adapted to project through opening (I, and provided with opening 0 to receive the pin 1) of arm B, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of hinged strips L, sash G, provided with countersunk hooks K, and boxes A, having extensible arms B, each provided with a pin, 1), window-frame provided with boxes D, having arms E, each provided with an opening, 0, to receive pin 1), and sashcord H, having rings h, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of strips L, hinged to the window-frame, upper sash, F, provided with countersunk hooks K, and boxes A, pro' vided with extensible arms B, having pins b, window-frame provided with boxes D,having extensible arms E, each provided with openings to receive pin 1), sash-cords H, having rings 71/, and removable strip m, substantially as specified.
