ADJUSTABLE PARTITION FOR BOXES.

articles of the same kind may be separated into smaller masses, so as to avoid bruising or crushing; and my invention is particularly adapted for use in boxes containing confectionery, which is liable to be crushed by its own weight when in large masses, 0r to adhere together in warm weather. Itis also adapted for use in packing fruits, and for many other articles.-

In use one or more of the supports D are placed across each of the strips G, which strips are then placed at such distances along the box as to divide it into spaces of the desired size, the supports D keeping the partitions C in an It' the box is to be divided by more than one tier of partitions, a sheet, K, of card-board or similar material is then placed on top of the partitions and a second tier is arranged thereupon, and this is proceeded with until the requisite number of tiers has been arranged. Any vacancy at the top of the box should be filled up, so that the supports will be held between the lid and bottom of the box. The weight or pressure will cause the projections on the flanges or bases G to catch on the flat material beneath them, so as 'g to prevent the supports D D and partitions C C from slipping or changing their positions.
The neatest and most satisfactory means of construction is to make the partsof such proportions thata certain number-one or moreof tiers will evenly :lill the box, thus holding the supports directly between the lid and bottom; but, as I have said, any space at the top can be filled up and the result will be the same.
The supports D D have suiiicient strength to bear all ordinary weight and pressure which is put upon them, and the more downward pressure they have upon them the more firmly they are held in their places. They thus sustain the pressure which would at once bend over or break the partitions O O if unsup ported, and form a iirm and convenient package.
My invention is cheap and easily manufactured and applied, it wears well, is not liable to be easily broken, and is in many respects a most valuable improvement. It is susceptible of various modifications, which do not, however, affect the merits of the invention. One of these modifications is shown in Figs. 7 and 8, where the points E E are sharp and bent at such an angle as to penetrate the material beneath them, and, catching therein, give a still firmer hold to the support.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
