ASHER BSTEVENS, OF NEW BRIDGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE RocKER SPRING COMPANY, or
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRING ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,854, dated December 13, 1887. Original applicalivn filed October 8, 1883. Serial No. 108,413. Divided and this application filed January 28, 1886. Serial No.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ASHER B. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States,-residing at New Bridge, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spring Attachments for Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invent-ion is to make an attachment for rocking-chair springs that will hold the ends of the spring rigidly when in place, and at the same time enable the spring to be removed and the chair shipped in separate pieces without disturbing or removing the portions of the brackets which are screwed to the rockers or base-rails; and it consists in the features of construction and arrangementhereinafter described.
In order to differentiate between the inventiou'herein claimed and the separable or twopart brackets covered in my applications, Serial Nos. 190,083 and 190,084, filed January 28,1886, I here state that the invention herein consists, broadly, of the bracket madein two parts, one attached to the coiled spring and the other adapted to be attached to the appropriate portions of the chair, the two when in operation being secured or fastened together.
In the accompanying drawings, in the two figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a top plan view, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section, in the plane of line y 3 0 Fig. 1, of one form of my invention.
This division of my application Serial No. 108,413 is made for the purpose of covering the two-part bracket therein shown and described.
The bracket B is composed of a base, a, provided, as usual, with holes for the passage of fastening devices-as screwsto secure the same to a chair, and an. arm, I). This portion of the bracket when once upon the chair may (No model.)
engage the spring between and by its end coils. The portion 12, when once applied to a spring, may remain with it, and when the spring is to be disconnected from the bracket the screw sis withdrawn, and the portion 1) with the spring is free to be removed.
What I claim is 1. The combination of the bracket base, spring-attaching portion b, arm b, projecting laterally from the base and engaging the spring-attaching portion, and means for locking the parts I; and I) together, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bracket-base a, s pringattaching portion 1), adapted to receive the end coil of a spiral spring, arm 12, projecting laterally from the base and engaging the spring-attaching portion, and a screw or bolt, 3, for fastening the parts b and I) together, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the base a, laterallyprojecting arm I), an attachable portion, b, adapted to receive the end coils of a coiled spring and having lugs h h arranged upon its upper surface to engage the sides of the arm, and a fastening device, 8, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of January, A. D. 1886.
ASHER B. STEVENS.
