UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
' SIEGFRIED WILLERSHAUSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,477, dated April 15, 1879; application filed February 12, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIEGFRIED WILLnRs- HAUSEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rocking-Chairs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure 1 shows a portion of a chair containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. My invention relates" to that class of chairs consisting of a spring connected rockingframe and base-frame; and it consists in a device for checking the forward and back motions of the rocking frame, composed of two plates for attachment to the frames-one bent to form a hook, and the other provided with a stop adapted to engage said hook in' both rocking motions, and provided with a lug, by the action of which, conjointly with that of the stop, one plate or frame is guided and held in proper relation to the other.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a portion of the rocking frame, and B is a portion of the base-frame, of a rocking-chair. O D are plates respectively attached to each of said frames, and E is a spring by means of which the frames are connected together, this spring being hung 011 pins to b, projecting from the plates.
On the upper end of the plate 0, attached to the base-frame, is formed a hook, F, while on the plate D, attached to the rocking frame, are formed a stop, G, and a lug or proj ection, H. The hook F is bent in such a manner that by a proper attachment of the plates (J D to the chair-frames the stop G is brought in contact with said hook both in the forward and back motions of the rocking frame, and by this means the motions of the rocking frame are regulated; and I prefer to so arrange the parts that the forward motion of the rocking frame is shorter than the back motion.
The shank of the hook F is so shaped that if the plates 0 D are properly attached to the chair-frames, the shank of the hook fits snugly between the stop G and the lug H when the rocking frame is atrest, as shown in Fig. 1; and if said frame becomes shifted during its motions, it is returned to the proper position by the action of the stop or the lug upon the hook.
By constructing the plates 0 D in this manner I obtain a very simple and efficient fixture for regulating the motions of therockingframe, and for holding the same in proper relation to the base-frame.
In the example shown, the lug H is cast upon the pin a, holding the upper end of. the spring E, and the stop Gr consists of a box in which is fitted a cushion of india-rubber, as clearly shown; but the construction and arrangement of these parts may be modified.
The spring E may be filled with cotton or other non-resonant material, to render'it noiseless in action. I
.I do not claim connecting the rocker and platform of a rocking-chair together through the medium of a spring and a plate having two books, which act in conjunction with a plate having a lateral stop, which stop at all timesis located between the two hooks, as such is not my invention. 7
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combinatiomwith the rocking and base frames of a rocking-chair, having .a springconnection between them, of the plate D, attached to the rocking frame, and constructed with the lug or projection H and stop G at or near opposite ends of the same, and the plate 0, attached to the base-frame, and constructed with a hooked upper end, the shank portion of which is arranged intermediate of the front and rear lug and stop, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of February, 1879.
