Abstract

The sleeves extend a short distance above the surface of the base plate after the cover plate is removed from it to accurately and dependably guide the applicator tube casings concentrically into engagement about the sticks.

The
viscid material in tubular applicator casings with minimal breakage and waste.
SUMMARY Guide sleeves are concentrically mounted about the cavities in the base plate of a two-part mold for sticks of viscid material, and extend a short distance above it. The protruding portions of the sleeves are received in corresponding recesses in the cover plate. When the sticks are poured and the cover plate is removed, the protruding sleeves remarkably facilitate and accurately guide the applicator casings into rapid engagement with the protruding ends of the sticks with almost no breakage or waste. The assembly time is thus remarkably decreased, by about 60 percent.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Novel features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent to one skilled in the art from a reading of the following description in onjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts and in which:

FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the cover plate shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view of the cover plate shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a side view in elevation partially broken away in cross-section of the base plate of one embodiment of this invention;
FIG. 5 is a top plan view of the base plate shown in FIG. 4;
FIG. 6 is a bottom plan view of the base plate of FIG. 4 with the cover plate of FIGS. 1-3 assembled upon it;
FIG. 7 is an enlarged partial exploded front elevational view in cross-section of corresponding portions of the plates shown in FIGS. 1 and 4;
FIG. 8 is a cross-sectional view taken through FIG. 6

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In FIGS. 1-3 is shown cover plate 10' of fixture 12 (shown assembled in FIGS. 6 and 8) for molding sticks 16 (shown in FIGS. 8 and 9) of viscid material, such as lipstick. Fixture 12 as shown in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 includes base plate l4as well as removable cover plate I0.
Base plate 14, as shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and 7-9 includes base cavities 18 which in conjunction with cover cavities 20 in cover plate 10 comprise the complete mold cavities for sticks of lipstick 16. Channel or reservoir 22 in the top of cover plate 10 connects with each of the cover cavities 20 for directing a flow of the viscid v substance into the complete cavities including base cavities l8 and upper cavities 20. Indexing pins 24 and corresponding slots or sockets 26 guide the assembly of plates 10 and 14 together into assembled fixture 12.
The viscid material in well or reservoir 22 is directed into aligned cavities 20 and 18 to mold sticks 16. After cover plate 10 is removed from base plate 14 as shown in FIG. 9, the upper ends of stick l6 protrude a short distance above base plate 14 for engagement within tubular casings 28 of applicators 29. The movement of casings 28 is guided by tubular sleeves 30, which are mounted concentrically about cavities 18 in base plate 14 and extend a short distance outwardly from parting surface 32 of base plate 14. Corresponding cylindrical recesses 34 extend upwardly from parting surface 36 of cover plate 10 for receiving the extending portions of sleeves 30 when cover plate 10 is assembled with base plate 14 as shown in FIG. 8. Also shown in FIG. 8 are cooling holes 38.
As shown in FIG. 9, sleeves 30 facilitate rapid and accurate engagement of tubular casings 28 of applicator 29 with inner ribs 40 of casings 28 securely wedged about the tops of sticks 16. The engagement or assembly of sticks 16 into applicators 29 can thus be accomplished in less than one-half the time previously required and with practically no breakage or waste of sticks, which heretofore was a considerable problem. About percent of the former labor time spent in as sembly is thus saved in addition to a highly significant conservation of material by avoidance of breakage.
I claim:
1. A fixture for molding sticks of viscid material and assembling them in tubular applicator casings comprising a base and cover plate having aligned adjoining cavities in adjacent surfaces within which said sticks are molded, sleeves mounted in said adjacent surface of said base plate concentrically about said cavities and extending outwardly a short distance away from said base plate, recesses corresponding to said sleeves in the surface of said cover plate for receiving said sleeves when said plates are assembled with said adjacent surfaces in intimate contact with each other, and said outwardly extending portions of said sleeves providing a convenient and accurate means for guiding said tubular applicator casings into engagement with the protruding ends of said sticks when said cover plate is removed to prevent said sticks from breaking and to minimize time required for said engagement.
2. A fixture as set forth in claim 1 wherein said cavities, tubular applicator casings, sleeves and recesses are cylindrical.
' 3. A fixture as set forth in claim 1 'wherein channel means are provided in the top of said cover plates remote from said cavities for directing a flow of said viscid material into said cavities when said plates are assembled with each other.
4. A fixture as set forth in claim 1 wherein indexing pins and sockets are provided opposite to each other in said plates for guiding the assembly of said plates with each other and whereby said sleeves are guided into said recesses.

Claims (4)

1. A fixture for molding sticks of viscid material and assembling them in tubular applicator casings comprising a base and cover plate having aligned adjoining cavities in adjacent surfaces within which said sticks are molded, sleeves mounted in said adjacent surface of said base plate concentrically about said cavities and extending outwardly a short distance away from said base plate, recesses corresponding to said sleeves in the surface of said cover plate for receiving said sleeves when said plates are assembled with said adjacent surfaces in intimate contact with each other, and said outwardly extending portions of said sleeves providing a convenient and accurate means for guiding said tubular applicator casings into engagement with the protruding ends of said sticks when said cover plate is removed to prevent said sticks from breaking and to minimize time required for said engagement.
2. A fixture as set forth in claim 1 wherein said cavities, tubular applicator casings, sleeves and recesses are cylindrical.
3. A fixture as set forth in claim 1 wherein channel means are provided in the top of said cover plates remote from said cavities for directing a flow of said viscid material into said cavities when said plates are assembled with each other.
4. A fixture as set forth in claim 1 wherein indexing pins and sockets are provided opposite to each other in said plates for guiding the assembly of said plates with each other and whereby said sleeves are guided into said recesses.
