Abstract
This invention relates to a housing for electrical components comprising a base member 10 and a lid member 11. One of these members has a wall portion such as portions 16 and 17 containing a notch such as notches 20 and 21 which, in association with the other member and when the housing is closed, forms an aperture. The aperture is closed by a strip such as strip 22 or 23 which is removably held between said base member 10 and lid member 11. Each of said strips 22 or 23 may be provided in its surface with a plurality of "break- out" portions which can if required be severed from the associated strip to provide a hole such as hole 24 or 25 or 26 or 27 through which an entry or exit lead can extend. Alternatively each of said strips 22 or 23 may be preformed with one or more holes through which entry and/or exit leads can be passed. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Housing for electrical components
This invention relates to a housing for electrical components and in one particular application such components may form part of an aerial installation although it is to be understood that a housing in accordance with the invention can be used for other purposes if desired. In using such a housing however the number and/or disposition of entry leads and exit leads which are required to extend into and out of the housing may vary in accordance with the purpose for which this housing is to be employed and it is one object of the invention to provide an improved form of housing which offers in a simple and economical manner the facility of varying the number and/or disposition of entry leads and exit leads as may be required.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a housing for electrical components comprising a base member and a lid member wherein one or each of said members is formed with a wall portion which is arranged to engage the other member and which is provided with at least one notch which forms, in association with said other member, an aperture which is closed by a strip removably held between said two members.
The aforesaid strip may be provided with a plurality of spaced "break-out" portions which are each capable of being severed from the strip to provide a hole through which an entry or exit lead can extend, or alternatively said strip may be preformed with one or more holes through which entry and/or exit leads can be passed.
Preferably, the base member and the lid member are each formed with a wall portion in which is provided at least one notch, the or each notch in one member being arranged, when said members are assembled together, to register with a notch formed in the other member. Furthermore, where there are two or more such notches formed in one or each member, there are conveniently provided at least two different lengths of notches and in this case at least two different lengths of strips can be used. In a convenient arrangement the housing is of square or rectangular configuration, the base member and the lid member being each formed with a wall portion along each of its four sides and each wall portion being formed with a notch as aforesaid.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one example of a housing in accordance with the invention, the housing being depicted in a closed position and
Figure 2 is a further perspective view of the housing seen in Fig. 1 but showing the base member and lid member separated from each other and one associated strip removed from the assembly.
Referring now to the drawing there is shown in Fig. 1 a housing for electrical components which comprises a base member 10 and a lid member 11, each of said members being conveniently formed as a moulding in a synthetic resin material. As shown the housing is of generally rectangular form in plan view although it is of course to be understood that it can be made in other configurations if desired. The example shown however is arranged so that the base member 10 is provided with a bottom 12 and four integrally connected wall portions of which two are indicated in Fig. 1 by reference numerals 13 and 14. The lid member 11 is formed with a top 15 and four integrally connected downwardly extending wall portions of which two are indicated in Fig. 1 by reference numerals 16 and 17.
Each of the aforesaid wall portions namely wall portions 13 and 14 of the base member 10 and wall portions 16 and 17 of the lid member 11 and also the other two wall portions of each of said members are each formed with a rectangular notch indicated in
Fig. 2 by reference numerals 18 and 19 so far as the base member is concerned and by reference numerals 20 and 21 so far as the lid member is concerned. It will also be observed that the notches 20 and 18 (which are of equal length) register with each other when the base member is assembled to the lid member and likewise the notches 21 and 19 which are also of equal length but somewhat longer than the aforesaid notches 20 and 18, also register with each other when the base member and lid member are assembled together.
There are also provided a plurality of strips which may also be formed from a synthetic resin material. Each strip is of generally rectangular form but the strips are of two different lengths a shorter strip being indicated by reference numeral 22 and a longer strip by reference numeral 23 it being understood that in the example described two strips 22 and two strips 23 will be provided, the two shorter strips 22 being employed along the two shorter sides of the housing and the strips 23 along the two longer sides of the housing.
Each of said strips 22 and 23 is formed with a plurality of spaced "break-out" portions which are each capable of being severed from the strip to provide a hole through which an entry or exit lead to or from the housing can extend. Thus in the drawing each longer strip 23 has four such "break-out" portions and each shorter strip 22 has three such "break-out" portions. In the case of the strips 23 two of such portions have been severed to form holes 24 and 25 and in the case of the strip 22 two "break-out" portions have
also been severed to form holes 26 and 27.
The upper and lower edges and the opposite
side edges of each strip 22 or 23 are conve
niently located within grooves which are
moulded around the inside edges of the afore
mentioned notches 20, 18, 21 and 19 formed
in the base member and lid member of the
housing and in assembling the housing the two strips 22 and the two strips 23 can be
initially located in the grooves formed in the
notches in the base member 10 before the lid
member 11 is placed over the base member
10 to engage the upper parts of said strips in the corresponding grooves formed in the respective notches of the lid member 11. The
lid member 11 can then be secured to the base member 10 as by means of screws inserted through apertures 28 and 29. It will of course be understood that the desired entry and exit leads would have been passed through the selected apertures formed in the aforesaid strips before the lid member is assembled to the base member.
In an alternative construction the or each of the strips which is located between the base member and the lid member is preformed with one or more holes as may be required and through which entry and/or exit leads can be passed.
