. UNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HORSEFIELD, OF MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,981, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed June 22, i887. Serial No. 242,142. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HORSEFIELD, of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Ladder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in ladders designed more particularly for painters use for supporting a scaffold alongside of a building; and the invention consists, principally, in combining with the ladder a screwrod to pass through the side pieces of the ladder and enter the side of the building to hold the ladder in upright position.-
The invention also consists in forming the ladder with side projections to space the ladder-from the side of the building.
The invention further consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter describedand claimed. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 shows the application of the ladder to the front of a building. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed perspective view of the cen: tral portion ofthe ladder, showing two sections spliced together; and Fig. 3 is a detailed side elevation of the same.
A represents an upper and B a lower section of the ladder. These are each composed of the two side pieces, a a, and the rungs b b,
The side pieces, a a, arejointed together by the lap-strips a a, the ends of which are notched, as shown at a of, to engage with the rungs c c, which are by preference made square or rectangular in cross-section, so that when the two parts of the ladder are united the said rungs will act as locks to the respect rungs.
through to one side of the ladder, as shown at ive sections. The rungs b are common short The rungs a are elongated and reach 0 to hold the ladder away from the building, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The rungs c are also elongated, as shown at c, for the same purpose.
Through the lap-pieces a a of the sections of the ladder are holes (I, for the passage of the rod 0, which is headed at its outer end and formed with a screw-thread at its opposite end to enter the side of the building for securing the ladder thereto for holding it securely in upright position.
When two ladders are put in position and made fast by the rod 0, scaffolding-boards may be placed from ladder to ladder upon the rungs, and they may be easily raised from rung to rung or lowered, as desired, and the extensions 0 c furnish working-space between the ladder and the building. In this manner the ladder or ladders serve the double purpose of supporting scaffolding and furnishing ready means for ascent and descent to and from the scaffold.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a ladder, of the screw-rod 0, passed through the side pieces of
