BENJAMIN F. STURGEON, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNO TO F. M. RICKERT, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
COMBINATION R or ONE-HALF STEP-LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 725,377, datecl'April 14., 190 3.
Application filed February 3, 1903. Serial No. 141,648. (No model-l To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. STURGEON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstowmin the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Step-Ladders, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combination step-ladder; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation'of myimproved combination step-ladder, showing one of the positions in which the ladder may be placed, the said view being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device in the form of an extension-ladder. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clamps arranged at the top of the lower section of the ladder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the top of each of the two sections of the ladder, showing the pin-and-socket connection.
To put my invention into practice, and thereby form a step-ladder that may be used for various purposes and arranged in different forms, I form from wood the side strips 8 of the lower section, the one connected to the other by parallel rungs 2 in a manner well known in the art. Attached to the top of each of these strips 8 are clamps 9, the one end 10 bent at a right angle and the other, 11, in the form of the letter U (see Fig. 4) in order to connect with the side strips 1 of the other or second section of the ladder. This second section consists of a ladder of about the same length as the lower section, and'it is provided on its inner edge with a reinforcing-strip 3 and notches 4, the said notches being arranged at regular intervals and are adapted to receivethe tops of the lower section 8 when it is desired to use the ladder with one leg longer than the other, as shown The top of this upper section is fitted with a platform 13, supported by a bracket 5, the said bracket being a part of the strip 3. The bottom section 8 is fitted with cap-pieces 12, (see Fig;-5,) carrying short studs 7, which engage with openings 6, formed in each of the notches 4. and also at the top of the upper section of the ladder. Pivoted at a point near the base of the upper section 1 of the ladder is a hook 16, limited in its forward movement by a backpiece 15 and designed to engage with one of the rungs 2 of the lower section 8 when used as an extension-ladder, as shown at Fig. 3. A brace or connecting bar 17 is loosely connected to one section of the ladder and adapted to engage with a pin 19, attached to the other section. a I
This ladder may be used and adjusted in the positions shown on the drawings or may be used as an ordinary step-ladder, in which case steps would be substituted in place of the rungs 2.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described combination step-ladder, consisting of the two sections 1 and 8, each of which is providedwith suitable steps or rungs, the clamps-9 for connecting the two sections, the said clamps being rigidly attached to one of the sections, the notches 4 formed in the edge of the section 1 to engage with the top of the other section 8, the pin 7 and openings 6 to prevent side movement, the top platform 13, the pivoted hook 16 and brace-bar 17, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. STURGEON.
In presence of- M. E. HARRISON, H. J. LEVIS.
