andpaway Fm DIESEL ENGINE INIECTUR FULLER The present invention generally relates to pullers, and is more particularly concerned with a uniquely constructed puller particularly adapted for use in removing diesel engine injectors.
It is an intention of the invention to provide an injector puller which, while of a basically simple construction, incorporates novel structural features which result in an easily mounted and adjusted device enabling the application of a substantial pulling force in order to effectively extract an injector rapidly and without undue effort.
Other objects of the invention include the provision of an extractor or puller which can accommodate either a lifting bar or a sliding hammer force applying means, and includes provision for a slightly off-center pull should such be necessary in effecting the removal.
Basically, the puller includes a pair of elongated jaws pivotally affixed, below the upper ends thereof, to a mounting base in the nature of a rectangular housing. A camming member is positioned between the upper ends of the jaws above the pivot points and is selectively moved downward so as to effect an outward camming of these upper ends anda corresponding inward camming of the lower gripping ends of the jaws into gripping engagement with the injector to be pulled. The adjustment of the cam or camming member is effected by an adjusting bolt which extends upwardly through the base, being rotatablyengaged by a crossbar affixed to the housing between the jaws below the point of pivotal mounting thereof. The upper end of the bolt is threadedly received through an internally threaded bore within the cam. The pulling force can be effected through a sliding hammer mounted on an elongated rod which is coupled to the upper end of the adjusting bolt whereby the upward pulling force is applied to the housing supported jaws below the point at which the jaws are mounted.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIG. I is a perspective view of the injector puller;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail of the puller mounted on an injector;
FIG. 3 is an exploded perspective view of the gripping components of the puller; and
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the puller with modified gripping ends on the jaws.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, reference numeral is used to designate the puller comprising the instant invention. The puller 10 includes a pair of vertically elongated jaws I2 having upper manipulating ends 14 and lower gripping ends 16.
A mounting base, in the nature of an elongated rectangular housing 18 including opposed side walls 20 and opposed end walls 22, receives the upper portions of the jaws 12. The jaws 12 are in turn pivotally mounted by a pair of elongated pivot pins 24 which extend through the jaws below the upper manipulating ends 14 thereof and engage the opposed side walls 20. As will be appreciated from FIG. 2, the jaws 12 generally parallel each other and are set inwardly from the opposed end walls 22 so as to enable an inward and outward swinging thereof sufficient so as to enable a proper ma nipulation of the jaws 112.
The inner surface of each of the jaws I2, at the upper manipulating end I4 thereof, includes an upwardly and outwardly inclined camming surface as. The lower gripping end 11s of each of the jaws I2 has the inner face thereof specifically configured so as to engage the outer end of the particular injector 28 to be pulled. In the case of the injector shown in FIG. 2, the gripping end of each jaw will include a multiple stepped configuration closely conforming to the stepped configuration of the outer end of the injector and providing multiple bearing surfaces between the jaws I2 and the injector 28. In the case of the injector 28' shown in FIG. 4, a single intumed or inwardly directed rib will be provided at the gripping end 16 of each jaw l2. With regard to both forms of gripping ends, such will be formed with a slight concavity on the injector engaging surfaces so as to conform to the arcuate outer periphery of the injector, whether it be injector 2% or injector 28'.
The mounting base 18 is completed by a crossbar Zlll passing between the jaws I2 and rigidly welded to the lower edges of the opposed side walls 20. This crossbar 30 includes an elongated aperture or opening 32 therethrough which receives an upwardly projecting threaded adjusting bolt 34. The enlarged head 36 of the adjusting bolt bears on the lower surface of the bar 20 and is of a size so as to preclude passage of the bolt 34 upward through the enlarged or elongated opening 32. The elongated opening 32 enables a slight lateral adjustment of the bolt 34 for reasons which shall be pointed out subsequently.
The actual adjustment of the jaws I2 is effected by a. camming member 38 seated within the housing I8 and in engagement with the opposed camming surfaces 26. This camming member 38 includes opposed inclined camming ends 40 which generally conform to the inclination of the camming surfaces 26 whereby a downward movement of the camming member 2% rela tive to the manipulating ends M of the jaws I2 will effect an outward swinging of these ends Id and a corresponding inward swinging of the lower gripping ends l6 into gripping engagement with the outer end of an injector to be pulled. The cam or camming member 3ft includes an elongated internally threaded bore d2 therethrough which threadedly receives the upper portion of the bolt 34. In this manner, rotational adjustment of the bolt 34, the head 36 being easily engaged between the jaws I2, will produce the desired adjust ment of the cam 38 and the corresponding swinging movement of the jaws I2. Once the jaws 112 have been brought into tight gripping or locked engagement with the injector 24, the desired pulling force can be applied. The preferred manner of exerting a pulling force is through the incorporation of a sliding hammer M on the injector 10. This is accomplished by coupling, through threaded coupling means 46, an elongated shaft 48 to the exposed upper end of the adjusting bolt 34. This shaft 48 slidably mounts the enlarged hammer 44 along the length thereof and includes a crosshead fill at the upper end thereof and a hammer engaging abutment 52 immediately below the crosshead or handle 50. Thus, once the puller is grip loclred to the injector, the hammer 44 will be slid upwardly so as to sharply engage the abutment 52, this movement being repeated sufficiently so as to effect the desired pulling or extraction of the injector. If so desired, through the coupled engagement of the shaft 48 with the threaded bolt 34, the mounting of the injector can be effected by a direct rotation of the shaft 48 which in turn will rotate the bolt 34 and move the cam 38 to manipulate the jaws 12.
Should an off-center pull be desirble or necessary so as to effect the extraction of the injector, the elongated opening 32 through the crossbar 30 enables a slight angular orientation of the bolt 34, shaft 48 and camming member 38. This angular orientation of the camming member 38 will, while causing a slightly different engagement with the camming surfaces 26, in no way affect the camming operation or the swinging movement of the jaws 12, as well as locking of the jaws 12 into gripped engagement with the injector. Further, should it be considered desirable, a lifting bar, engageable between the jaws and against the bolt head 36 or crossbar 32 can be utilized to effect the desired upper movement of the injector rather than utilizing the sliding hammer 44 and mounting shaft 48 therefor. In either case, it will be noted that the lifting force is applied to the mounting base or housing 18 at the lower portion thereof, below the points at which the jaws 12 are mounted, thus enabling the application of a more stable and effective lifting force.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that a simple although highly effective and uniquely constructed puller has been defined. This puller provides means for effectively moving a pair of opposed gripping jaws into locked engagement with an injector, the jaws, once engaged, being locked into position and effectively maintained throughout the pulling operation. The injector in turn is so structured as to enable the application of alternate pulling forces as well as the particular direction along which such forces are applied.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
