1 Claim. (CI. 81-41) This invention relates to improvements in vices that are adapted to be used with sawhorses.
An object of this invention is to provide a vice that permits a worker to handle more efliciently board lumber or similar materials.
Another object of this invention is to provide a vice that will hold the material at any desired angle or position that is desired by the worker.
A further object of this invention is to provide a vice that will make working with any material retained in the vice easier and faster.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a vice embodying the invention, mounted on a sawhorse;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of Fig. 1 on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2'
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring more in details to the drawings, wherein like parts are designated by like reference numerals, the reference numeral is used to designate a vice embodying the invention.
The vice 10 comprises a U-shaped mounting clamp 11 that is adapted to be positioned on the railing A of a sawhorse B. The clamp 11 comprises a cross plate 12 and a pair of parallel side plates 13 and 14 that extend from the opposite side edges of the plate 12. An opening 15 is positioned in the side plate 13 at the approximate center thereof, a nut 16 is secured to the outer surface of the plate 13 in alinement with the opening 15 and a bolt 17 is rotatably mounted in the nut 16. The bolt 17 has a handle 18 on the outer end thereof whereby the sharp end 19 of the bolt 17 is driven into the railing A until penetration of the sharp end 19 is stopped by a stop collar 20.
An opening 21 is positioned in the plate 14 adjacent the lower edge, centrally thereof, and a nut 22 is secured to the outer surface of the plate 14 in alinement with the opening 21. Another opening 23 is positioned in the plate 13 adjacent the lower edge, centrally thereof, and a bolt 24 is extended through the openings 23 and 21 to rotatably engage the nut 22. The free end of the bolt 24 is provided with a handle 25 whereby the bolt 24 is rotated in the nut 22.
Welded to the plate 14, centrally thereof, is a circular bearing 26 and the inner end of a hollow tubular shaft 27 is inserted into the bearing 26 and welded to the plate 14 and bearing 26.
Mounted for rotation on the shaft 27 is a sleeve 28 2,907,238 Patented Oct. 6, 1959 and a plate providing a fixed jaw 29 has one side thereof welded to the sleeve 28. One longitudinal edge of the jaw 29 is welded to the plate 14 so that the jaw 29 is in vertical relation to the transverse axis of the sleeve 28. The sleeve 28 is provided with an opening 30 and a nut 31 is welded to the outer surface of the sleeve 28 in alinement with the opening 30. A bolt 32 is rotatably mounted in the nut 31 and a handle 33 is provided on the outer end of the bolt 32.
An arcuate plate 34 is welded at its central portion to the sleeve 28 and at one of its ends to the lower end of the jaw 29. A flat plate 35 is formed integral with the opposite ends of the plate 34 and extends at right angles thereto so that the free end of the plate 35 is Welded to the jaw 29.
The jaw 29 inwardly of the plate 35 is provided with an opening 36 centrally thereof and a nut 37 is welded to the outer surface of the jaw 29 in alinement with the opening 36.
.An adjusting screw 38 is rotatably mounted in the nut 37 and one end thereof extends through an opening 39 in the plate 34 that is in alinement with the nut 37. A handle 40 is provided on the opposite end of the screw 38 for rotation of the screw 38 in the nut 37.
A plate providing a movable'jaw 42 is provided centrally thereof with an opening 43 so that the jaw 42 may be looselymounted on the screw 38. A pair of flat washers 44 and 45, respectively, are welded to the screw 38 on opposite sides of the plate 42'. The washers 44 and 45 are spaced from each other so that the screw 38 may be rotated without the plate 42 binding between the washers 44 and 45.
A pair of guide rods 46 and 47, respectively, are welded at one end to the jaw 42 and the guide rods 46 and 47 extend through openings 48 and 49 in the plate 34 and openings 50 and 51 in the jaw 29 so that the guide rods 46 and 47 are in parallel spaced relation to and outwardly of the screw 38. A cotter key 52 is provided in each of the free ends of the rods 46 and 47 to act as stops for the movable jaw 42.
A wooden block 53 is secured to the inner surface of the jaw 42 adjacent the outer end thereof by screws 54 and a similar wooden block 55 is secured to the inner surface of the jaw 29 by screws 56. The blocks 53 and 55 form bearing or gripping faces for the jaws 29 and 42 and are in parallel opposed relation to each other.
A circular bearing cap 57 is welded to the outer end of the shaft 27 to prevent the sleeve 28 from sliding off of the shaft 27.
In the use of the vice 10, the clamp 11 is positioned over the railing A of the sawhorse B at any desirable location within the length of the railing A as shown in Fig. 1.
The handle 18 is then manipulated to rotate the bolt 17 until the sharp end 19 thereof penetrates the railing A until stopped by the collar 20. Thus preventing the vice 10 from sliding laterally on the railing A. The handle 25 is then manipulated to rotate the bolt 24 in the nut 22 to firmly fasten the clamp 11 to the railing A.
The jaws 42 and 29 are related to the clamp 11 by reason of the shaft 27 and sleeve 28 so that the jaws 42 and 29 may be rotated in a complete circle about the shaft 27. Thus when a piece of material C is engaged by the blocks 53 and 55 through manipulation of the handle 40, the jaws 42 and 29 may be moved so that the material C can be positioned at any desired angle with relation to the shaft 27. When the material C has been located in the desired position the handle 33 is manipulated until the bolt 32 engages the shaft 27 to firmly retain the material C in the desired location.
Thus the vice 10 permits the material C to be positioned for the most efficient operation thereon.
The handle 40 is manipulated to cause the screw 38 to be rotated to move the movable jaw 42 in relation to the fixed jaw 29 and the cotter keys 52 prevent the separation of the jaws from coactual engagement with each other.
There has thus been provided a vice that will permit materialgripped thereby to be positioned in the most convenient location for efficient Work thereon and it is believed that the construction and operation of the vice will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
It is also to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall Within the spiritof-the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A vice for attachment to a sawhorse comprising a U- shaped mounting clamp including a cross plate and a pair of parallel side plates that extend from the opposite side edges of said cross plate, one of said side plates having an opening therein centrally thereof, a nut secured to the outer surface of said one side plate in circumjacent relation to the opening therein, a bolt having a handle on one end and apenetrating pointand stop collar on the other end threadabl-y mounted in said nut, the other of said side plates having an opening therein adjacent the free edge thereof, a nut secured to the outer surface of said other side plate in circumjacent relation to the opening therein,
said one side plate having an opening therein in alinement with the opening in said other side plate, a screw bolt having a handle on one end extended through the opening in said one side plate for engagement with the nut on said other side plate, a circular bearing rigidly secured to the outer surface of said other side plate, a hollow tubular shaft having one end inserted into said bearing and secured to said other side plate, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said shaft, a first plate providing a fixed jaw secured to said sleeve, a set screw mounted in said sleeve for engagement with said shaft for retaining said sleeve in adjusted relation to said shaft, an arcuate plate secured to said sleeve in opposed relation to said first plate, a second plate integral at one end with said arcuate plate and rigidly secured at the opposite end to said first plate, a screw bolt extending through said first plate and said arcuate plate in parallel relation to said second plate, a third plate providing a movable jaw loosely mounted on said last said screw bolt, a pair of parallel guide rods secured to said third plate and extending through said first and second plates, a wooden block secured to the inner faces of said first and third plates and a bearing cap secured to the outer end of said shaft to prevent said sleeve from sliding off of said shaft.
