UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFIca ELEANOR N. OUNNIhTGHAM, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELEANOR N. CUNNING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in Shoes, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to the class of overshoes commonly known as india rubber overshoes, that are made low in front and at the sides, and, having no strap or other means of fastening across'the instep or around the ankle of the wearer, depend mainly on the elasticity of the material of which they are made to keep them in place. It is well known that such shoes after some use'are apt to become loose and to slip down and off the heel, and thus become detached from the foot. My invention is intended to obviate this difficulty. I do this by-the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of a rubber overshoe of the class above mentioned, and in which the letter Aindicates the strap or band herein-below described.
I make the shoe with an attaching strap or band of like material and integral with the.
shoe at the top of the quarters or heel portion thereof, and shorter than the heel pori'orming part of Letters Patent No. 373,054, dated November 15, 1887.

tions, so that in use the strap is adapted to pass around the rear of and clasp the hollow of the ankle of the wearer. just above the projecting part of the heel, and is attached to the body of the shoe at each side of the ankle. The shoe is applied to the foot in the ordinary way, by simply drawing the same on; and the effect of the strap is,-that as the heel part of the shoe tends to slip comes tightenedand resists and prevents the shoe coming off.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An overshoe of the class herein described, with an attaching strap or band of like material and integral with the body of the shoe at the top of the heel portion thereof, and shorter than the heel portion, so that in use the strap is adapted to pass around the rear of and clasp the hollow of the ankle of the wearer just above the projecting part of the heel, substantially as and for the purpose herein described and shown.
