CARL HAFFNER, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
SHEET-PILING ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,410, dated November 1, 1887.
Application filed February 16, 1885. Rerewed September 14, 1887. Serial No. 249,688. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL HAFFNER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet Piling Attachments forPrinting-Presses,of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved sheet-piling attachment for the fly-table of printing-presses,whereby the sheets delivered bytthe fly are piled up regularly without requiring the attendance of a iiy-boy.
The invention consists of a sheet-piling attachment for the fly'tables of printing-presses, which is composed of a wing shaped upper part and an openframed lower weighted part, said attachment being hinged to the edge of the fiy-table, as will appear more fully hereinafter and finally be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the rear end ofa printing-press. showing my improved sheetpiling attachment arranged at the fly-table of the press. Figs. 2 and 3 show side and end elevations of my improved piling attachment, drawn on alarger scale. Fig. 4 is an end view of the fly-table with my improved attachment.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the fly-table of a printing-press, to the rear edge of which is applied the sheet'piling attachment B, that is made of a wing-shaped upper part, b, of thin sheet metahthat extends above the fly-table A, and of a lower weighted part, (Z. The wing shaped part bis hinged to the edge of the flytable or below the same, the lower weighted part being formed of a wire frame, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, that is provided with eyes d d for the pintle e of the attachment.
When the front and side gages, f, have been placed in proper position on the fly-table and the printing-press is started, the fly delivers the sheets onto the fly-table, which are then regularly set u p by the piling attachment. The draft exerted by the air on the upper wing shaped end of the piling attachment throws the same in backward direction against the action of its weight, while thelatter returns the wing-shaped upper part and moves thereby the sheet forward by the oscillating motions imparted to the attachment. As one sheet after another is delivered on the fly-table the piling attachment arranges them in connection with the gages in a reliable and uniform manner.
I do not claim the combination, with a receiving-table provided with gages and a By sheet-delivery, of an evener or straightening device hung at the outer edge of the table, capable of outward movement by the blasts of air produced by the fly and adapted in its return movement to push inward the newly-delivered sheet against the gages. Nor do I claim the combination, with a receivingtable having gages and a fly, ofan evener or straightening device made heavier at its lower portion and hung to the outer edge of the table.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sheet-piling attachment for the fly-tables of printing-presses,composed ofawingshaped upper part and an open-framed weighted lower part, and a hinge for connecting the attachment to the edge of the table, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL H AFFNER.
