Patented Dec. 23, 1862.
Witnesses AM. PHOTO-LITHO. CO. NM (OSBORNE'S PROCiSS.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. HARRIS, OF BATTLE GREEK, MICHIGAN.
I MPROVEMENTIN HOLDBACKS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,227, dated December 23, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. HARRIS, of the city of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Device for Attaching Holdback-Straps to the Shafts of Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters refer to like parts in the differ ent figures, 1, 2, and 3, of the drawings.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a safer and more convenient mode of attaching holdback-straps to shafts, and adjustingthelength of the same with less trouble than by any other method of attaching.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
S S represent the shaft of the vehicle.
A A represent a bar, which is partially let into the under side of the shaft, and is graduated by notches at a suitable distance apart.
B represents astirrup or ring, which embraces the shaft S S andthe bar A A, and rests in any one of the notches required.
0 represents a spring 'runnin g along the under side of the bar A A and through the mortise M in the lower part of the stirrup B, to hold the stirrup in its proper position. The bar is fastened to the shaft by the screws E F, and the spring is fastened at the under side of the bar at one end by the screw E, and at the other end by the pin G, which has ahead, and passes through the slot D in the spring and into the bar, which allows the spring to be pressed down in moving the stirrup from one notch to another. The holdback-strap should, for convenience, be provided with a hook or snap, and hook into the hole H in the top of the stirrup B.
The different parts may be made of any suitable metal.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The use of a graduated bar, in combination with a movable stirrup or ring and a spring, for the purpose and substantially as set forth.
