UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MIOIAH WVALKER, OF PORDHURON, MICHIGAN.
SHUT-OFF BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,244, dated October 25, 1887.
Application filed September 23, 1886. Serial No. 214,397.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MroIAH WALKER, of Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in ShutrOff Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in shutoff boxes for gas and water valves; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the extension, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure l is an elevation of my improved shut oli' box as it appears when in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view'of the upper end of the box and of the cover detached from each other. Figs. 3and4 are two crosssections of the cover at right angles to each other. 1
A is a cylindrical shutoff box provided with a suitably-shaped foot, B, which fits over the valve case, so as to exclude the dirt and be supported thereon.
D is an extension to the shut-ofl" box, so arranged that it slips over the part A and forms a sliding joint therewith, which permits the lengthening out or shortening of the box to adjust its upper end to the surface of the ground. The extension is provided with spiral-shaped wings or flanges E, preferably two in number, and placed upon opposite sides. These flanges support the extension in the ground wherever its adjustment will place it, and also form a simple means for adjusting the (No model.)
extension up or down by simply turning it on its axis with a wrench or other suitable tool, thereby causing the wings E to act like the 40 spiral of an auger.
F is the cover of the box. For the purpose of fastening it in position the extension D is provided at its top with two cam or spiral flanges, G, cut away at two opposite places, H. 5 The cover F has a dependent flange, 1, provided upon opposite sides with a lip, J, all so arranged that when the cover is placed upon the box with the lips engaging on the cutaway portions H thereof the cover can be closed down on the box and fastened firmly by turning it on its axis.
To prevent the cover from becoming in any way loose when so secured it is provided upon the under side with raised bearing-points K, opposite to each other, so that when secured in place the cover rests on these bearing-points, which permit of its being so firmly secured that without proper tools it is impossible to remove it.
It will be seen that my shut-01f box acc0mplishes all the objects I have stated.
That I claim as my invention is- The combination, with the shut-ofi' box, of an extension sliding loosely thereon, and provided with external spiral-shaped wings, E, extending therefrom free of the box, whereby said extension is held in position in the earth by said wings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
