' Connecticut, have invented certain new and haaren Srarns Farrar @hanna HENRY E. EARLE, CF DANBURY, CONNECTICUT.
ADJUSTABLE ROD AND BOX FOR WATER, GAS, AND STEAM PIPES.
SPECIFICATION fori-ning part of Letters Patent No. 307,753, dated November l1, 1884.
Application tiled January 24, 18M.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. EARLE, a l citizen of the United States, residing Aat Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of useful Improvements in Adjustable Rods and Boxes for TVater, Gas, and Steam Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adj ustable rods and boxes for water, gas, and steanrpipes; and the object is to produce a device by which the cocks or valves in water, gas, and steam pipes can be easily and readily operated when said cocks or valves are placed at different depths or heights, and also that said device can be produced at avery reasonable expense, is not liable to get out of order or become inoperative, that it will not become easily iilledl up or clogged with loose earth, LYc., and is always ready for use, and requiring no further adjustments or changes.
My invention consist-s, primarily, in an adjustable operating-rod with which the cocks or valves in water, gas, or steam pipes can be opened and closed when placed at diii'erent depths or heights, said rod being made in two sectionsv sliding telescopically within each other. r Thelower section is provided with a key or wrench of any suitable size and shape to iit the plug of the valve or cock.
It also consists, in connection with said rod, of an adjustable box the sections ot which can be telescopically adjusted with the rod.
It also consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters indicate like parts in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section ot' my device ready for operation with a pipe. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the upper part ot' the box. Fig. 3 is a detail view ot' the operating-rod. Fig. l is a crosssection on line 00 x. Fig. 5 is a detail of the lower end of the rod.
In said drawings, A represents the lower section of the operating-rod, which is provided at its lower end with a key or wrench, c, which (No model.)
is made to suit any suitable size or shape ot' head of the cock or valve. This section is made tube-shaped, and terminates at its upper end in a square part, o, into which the upper section, I3, of the rod lits, so that it can easily slide in it, so as to be adjusted to any desired depth or height. The section B is made ot square shape, although it may be made hexagonal orV other angular shape, to prevent it from turning. At its upper end this section is provided with a collar, c, secured thereto and placed at a proper distance from the top ot' said section to apply a key or wrench by which to operate the entire rod. This telescopic rod is placed into a box of proper size, also made in sections, so that the sections can be adjusted at the same time with the rod to accommodate itselt' with it. The lower section, C, is provided with a flange, (l, to give vit a tirm bearing, and has at its upper end an inward-projecting iange, e. Into the sectionv C is loosely iitted an upper section, D, also provided with an outer flange, f, arranged so that the two iianges, when coming in contact with each other, limit thevmovement or both and form a stop. The lower section is irmly secured into the ground, and has an enlargen1ent, f/, to receive the enlarged key or wrench.
To the upper section, I), which is screwthreaded at that end, is attached a box, E, havn ing a cover, F, attached to it in any suitable manner. In the drawings the cover is shown provided with lugs 7i, which pass through notches i, Fig. 2, so that by giving said cover a quarter-turn it may be secured in place.
Instead of this arrangement the cover may, however, be hinged and secured in any other suitable manner. rIhe lower part of the box E is provided with lugs 7.', or ring which passes over the collar c on the rod B and holds it in place. l
rlhe key partof the rod A may be provided with a square or other shaped hole, as indicated by the dotted lines shown in Fig. 5.
The bottoni of the box E, when placed onto the upper section, D, 'of the inclosing-box for the rod A B, serves to hold 'the adjustable box in position when placed in the ground, as rep resented in Fig. l. The collar c also serves IOO ICL
` claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
isf 1. An adjustable rod for operating the cocks or valves of water, gas, or steam pipes, made of an upper and lower section sliding telescopically into each other to suit different depths or heights, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of an adjustable rod for operating the cocks or valves of water, gas, or steam pipes, made of an upper and lower section, arranged to slide adj ustably into each other, with a box consisting of an upper and lower teiescopicallysliding section, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of an adjustable rod for operating cocks or valves ot' water, gas, or steam pipes, constructed as described, with an inclosing-boX having an upper part provided With lugs or iiange k, for holding the upper section, B, of the rod in place, as specied.
4. The combination of an adjustable operating-rod, A B, with an adjustable box consisting of the sections O and D, provided with the anges e and f, respectively, as and for the purpose herein specitied.
5. The adjustable operating-rod consisting of a solid `section sliding telescopically in a tubular section provided with akey or wrench, as and for the purpose described.
6. The combination of an adjustableoperating-rod, consisting of an upper and lower section sliding telescopically into each other', with au adjustable inclosing -boX provided with a removable top section having lugs or iange lc and a cover, F, arranged substantially as specified.
7. The combination of an adjustable oper'- ating-rod with an adjustable box consisting of the sections C and D, provided with flanges e f, and the lower section having the enlargenient g and iiange d, and the upper section provided with a street-box, E, with a cover, F, all arranged substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of an adjustable boX made of telescopic sections, the upper section supporting the upper section of an adjustable operating-rod provided with a collar, and both rod and box arranged to be simultaneously. adjusted, as and for the purpose specified.
9. The combination, substantialiy as described, of an adjustable operating-rod and an adjustable. inclosing-box arranged to be operated simultaneously tosuit different heights or depths, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY E. EARLE.
