WAS-HSTAND.
To all whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE T. MAIL- LETTE and DONALD A. MoGREeoR, citizens of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Chelan and State" of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashstands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to a new and use ful improvement in washstands which can be adjusted for the convenience of persons of different heights.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a washstand with means for automatically raising and lowering the same which can be operated from the bowl of the stand.
Other objects will appear hereinafter as the description continues.
WVith the above and other objects in view this invention consists of an adjustable base which is provided with a hydraulic ram for raising and lowering the upper section of the base and also a valve for regulating the flow of liquid to the cylinder of the hydraulic ram. w
This invention further consists of novel details of construction, combination, formation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and particularly pointed out in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a washstand embodying our invention as applied to the floor of a building; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. i is a similar section taken on the line 1-4 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein like parts are designated by like numerals throughout the several views the numeral 10 indicates a floor of a building having an opening 11 formed therein over which is mounted our improved washstand. This washstand comprises two sections 12 and 13 respectively which are telescopically connected. A ring '14 encircles the opening 11 formed in the floor of the building and has extending at right angles thereto a flange 15 which is secured to the floor of the building. The lower extremity of the section 13 is flared- Specification of Letters Patent.

as at 16 and is secured to the flange portion -15of the ring by means of bolts or the like. Each of these sections 12 and 13 is preferably made from rolled sheet metal and connected at their extremities as at 17 by means of screws as more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The connection of the lateral ends of the upper section 12 lies flush with the outer surface of the section so the same may slide easily within the lower section 13.
Secured to the upper section 12 is a washbowl 18 made preferably of porcelain or other well known material and has extending around its'upper edge a metal flange 19. Mounted within the bowl 18 are the usual hot and cold water pipes 20 and 21 respectively each being provided with the spigots 22 to regulate the flow of water intothe bowl. These pipes 20 and 21 respectively are connected to the main supply pipes by means of flexible tubing 23 which are connected to the sections 12 and 13 respectively by brackets 2 1 so that as the stand is raised or lowered the tubing may also be adjusted. A drain pipe 25 is also connected to the bowl 18 and is provided at its upper end with a rubber seat 26 to receive the ball ing the upper section 12 of the washstandwe have provided a hydraulic ram which consists of a cylinder 29 secured to the ring 14: by diagonallyextending brace rods 30. A piston '31 of any well known construction is mounted for reciprocation within the said cylinder and has secured thereto a piston rod 32 the outer end thereof being coupled to the basin 18 as at 33. The upper end of the cylinder is provided with an adjustable cap 36 having the usual packing box 37 mounted thereon to insure a water tight connection around the piston rod.
A turning valve indicated generally by the numeral 38 is mounted adjacent the cylinder 29 and has extending therefrom tubing 39 and 40 respectively which are connected to the upper and lower ends of the piston to form a communication from the main water supply. A valve stem 57 is connected to this turning valve and extends up through the stand through an elongated slot 58 formed in the upper end thereof and is then bent to conform to the configuration of the outer surface of the bowl. The upper end of this stem is provided with a handle 59 which operates within a slot formed in a plate 60 mounted upon the bowl 18. This plate 60 having graduations marked thereon to indicate the various positions of the stand and the handle 59 has a pointer 61 formed thereon so that by operating said handle the valve will be opened so that the stand may be raised or lowered according to the positions indicated by the pointer 61. This stem 57 is journaled within suitable bearings 62 mounted on each of the sections 12 and 13 and it is also telescopic so that as the stand is adjusted the stem may also be adjusted. The lower portion of the stem 5 is slidably mounted within. the upper section and has laterally extending therefrom lugs 63 which slide within vertically extending slots 6-1 formed in the upper section. This will obviously permit the bowl to be raised and lowered and also as the upper portion of the stem is rotated the lower portion will also be rotated thereby operating the valve.
Itis to be understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that other minor dc tails of construction may be resorted to that come within the scope of the present invention.
What we claim is 1. In a wash stand comprising two sections telescopically connected, the lower secbase comprising two sections, one of the said sections being permanently mounted upon the floor of a building, the opposite said section being slidably mounted in the first mentioned section, a wash bowl permanently mounted upon the last mentioned section, means for raising and lowering said wash bowl, means for controlling the operation of the last mentioned means, a telescopically connected rod mounted within said base and connected to the said controlling means, a lever connected to the upper end of said rod and carried by said wash basin substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the present of two witnesses.
