SERVICE-PIPE BOX.
Specification of Lettezs Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911 Application4 led December 24, 1910. Serial No. 599,097.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be. it known that I, HENRY D. yKEI-IR, Sr., a cit1zen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in theV county of Mercer and State -of New Jersey, have invented certain new ;.the box with supporting means for the con- ,trolling valve so that said valve can be 1,readily .manipulated bythe usual turning tool, and also to provide the box with an adjustable section so that the same can be adjusted relative to the distance of the valve from the surface of the ground.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of -changes yin details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodi- Ement of which is shown in the accompany- Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional j view of the improved service pipe box. Fig.
` taryview in end elevation of the base of the box.
vReferring to the accompanying drawings 'by numerals, it'will be seen that the iml proved box comprises a cylindrical body 1 the upper portion of which is externally 'threaded for 'engagement wit the internal threads of a cylindrical up er section 2. The upper end portion of section 2 is -provided with internal oppositely disposed lat erally projecting flanges 3 which are engaged by the hook-shaped lugs 4 that depend from the cover 5 for detachably locking said cover in position to seal the upper end of said section 2. The upper surface of cover 5 is provided with recesses 6 adapted to be en aged by a Spanner or other convenient too to rotate the coverl to engage its lugs 1 with or Vdisengage the same from, the flangesa A lid or cover 7 is loosely seated on the upper end of body 1 within section 2 and is equipped with a handgri 8.
Theybase of body 1 is enlarged) to provide an upper section 9 of a controlling valve casing and the semi-cylindrical ends 10 thereof are provided with flanges 11 provided with recesses 12. The longitudinal` sides of said section 9 are provided with flat outwardly projecting flanges 13. The base sect-ion 14of said'casing is preferably semicylindritlal and provided with recessed end flanges 15 complemental to the end flanges 11 of section 9 and which produce openings through which the service pipes 16 extend when the two sections are assembled, as is clearly shown in Figsfl and 3 of the accompanying drawings. The base section 14 is provided with outwardly projecting flat flanges 17 at its longitudinal sides which are bolted or otherwise detachably fastened to the llangtis 13 of section 9. Section 14 is provided with a central recess 18 which provides clearance space for the base of the controlling valve 19, and adjacent opposite portions of the said recess, ribs 20 extend transversely across 'the section 14 and are provided with lat portions 21 which are shaped to conform to the contour of and form seats for the end couplings 22 which connect the service pipes 16 tosaid valve 19.
It will be understood from the foregoing that this invention provides an adjustable upper section. 2 which can be readily adjusted on the body 1 so that the top of section 1 will be flush with the surface of the ground and the base casing of thebody 1 inclose the valve 19. It will also be understood that by removing the covers of sectionA 2 and body 1 the usual tool can be passed through the box 'to operate the valve 19.
And as the base of the box incloses thel valve 19, there is no danger of the boxbeing accidentally moved therefrom.
What I claim as my invention is A' service pip'e box lcomprising a body provided with an enlarged base havin .semi-cylindrical ends, said base provide with Vside flanges, a removable section pro- In testimony whereof I hereunto ax my vided with semoy1ndrca1 ends and; a cen-` signature in presence of two Witnesses. tml recess, vatve reets on oppovste vsdesl of HENRY D.
