Description

(fie Model.)
J. G. EDDY.
LADDER. No. 872,133. Patented Oct. 25, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. EDDY, OF FAYETTE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO E. P. EWERS, OF SAME PLACE.
; LADDER.
.IiPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,133. dated October 25, 1887.
Application filed June 4, 1887. Serial No. 240,276. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. EDDY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladders; and I do declare the follow-- a ladder in sections which may be so diflerently arranged and coupled together as to serve various purposes.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation in perspective showing the sections coupled together so as to form a platform-ladder; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the sections coupled to form a solid step-ladder, and Fig. 3 a plan view showing the sections coupled to form an extension-ladder. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the notched brace.
In the drawings, A represents the sections, each one being formed of the sides a a, endnotched at a.
B are the usual rungs, and B the end rungs, which are extended at b beyond each of the sides. These extensions pass into the end notches,-a, and are there held by the pivoted hooks O.
D is a notched brace which receives the highest rung in another section to form a lock and hold the ladder steady.
When it is desired to form an extension-ladder, any number of sections may be connected together, while the ends of every two adjacent sections have the sides interlapping, so as to prevent any possibility of lateral displace ment. The extensionladder is thus made as strong and secure as if all the sections were integral, while it is not so oumbrous and unwieldy to handle and can be put away with much more convenience.
W hen the sections are not in use, they may be quickly taken apart, piled together, and packed away in a very small space, so as to be out of the way and yet protected from the weather.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In ladders, the combination of sections end-notched at a, end rungs provided with extensions 12, and hooks arranged as shown, whereby a solid step-ladder, a platform-ladder, or an extension-ladder may be formed in the manner described.
2. In sectional step -ladders, the notched brace D, arranged on the end of one section to receive the highest rung in another at different inclinations, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN G. EDDY.
