SWINGING STOVE-PIPE SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 371,201, dated October 11, 1887.

Application filed March 23, 1886.

To all whom/"it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR F. KNowLToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, haveinvented a new and useful Swinging Stove-Pipe Shelf; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved stove-pipe shelf for use and adjustable upon stovepipes, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of shelf in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side view of shelf in position for use. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of shelf turned up when not in use.

Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the figures.

The object of my invention is to provide a shelf which may be easily attached to the stove-pipe and quickly removed therefrom, which may be adjusted on the pipe at any de sired elevation above the top of the stove, and which may be turned up against the pipe and out of the way when not in use.

In construction I provide a bracket, A. having its back side preferably hollowed to fit the circumference of the stove-pipe P, and having downward extensions a, a, which bear upon the face of the pipe and prevent the bracket from tilting forward. The bracket A is designed to admit of the shelf 13 (hereinafter described) being hinged or pivoted thereto, and, as a convenient means of accomplishing that result, I have provided upon the under side thereof lugs :0 x, to which the shelf B is hinged upon the pintlespp.

The shelf B may be made of any convenient orsuitable shape, and is arranged to be hinged or pivoted to the bracket A in any convenient manner. In the drawings I have shown the lugs 11 1) upon the under side of the shelf, so placed as to be hinged with the lugs 00 0: upon the bracket A by the pintles pp. The lugs b b, moreover, serve a further purpose. Being extended backward toward the bracket, they bear upon the under side of the top of the bracket and assist in preventing the shelf from dropping below the horizontal plane. In this function they are assisted by the lugs 3 and 3/, formed, respectively, upon the under side of said bracket and shelf, and so formed Serial No. 106,286. (No model.)

and placed as to bear against each other when the shelf is horizontal.

I further provide the U shaped bail or clasp O, by which the whole device is removably secured to and vertically adjustable upon the stove-pipe P. The loop of the bail is designed to embrace the pipe, and its ends, which are screw-threaded, pass through the extensions a a of the bracket A from rear to front, and are secured by the winged nuts 0 0.

Upon one of the lugs b b, Ipivot the stop or button 8 in such manner as that when the shelf is turned upward the stop shall fall backward and rest upon thetop of the corresponding one of the lugs 00 0c, and so prevent the shelf from falling forward.

In operation the whole device issecured to the Stovepipe by the bail O at any desired point, and fastened there by tightening the winged nuts 0 c. If it be desired to shift ti e vertical adjustn'ient of the shelf, one of the nuts is loosened, the whole device raised or lowered to the desired point, and the nut then tightened, as before. If it be desired to remove the shelf entirely, both nuts are unscrewed and the bail removed.

Among the advantages of my shelf may be mentioned the following: It is adjustable at any heightnpon the pipe, and is removable therefrom at pleasure. When not in use, it may be swung out of the way by turning it upward and backward against the pipe, thus avoiding the necessity of detaching it therefrom. 1

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'i s l. The herein-described swinging stovepipe shelf, consisting of the combination of the bracket A, having downward extensions a a, lugs 00 m and lug 1, bail O, with winged nuts 0 c, shelf B, having lugs b b and lug '1', and pintles p p, substantially as described.
