Abstract
A conventional screwdriver is provided with a screw holding attachment which includes a screw gripping jaw assembly mounted on the shank of the screwdriver for compound movement axially and radially thereof. Axial movement of the jaw assembly toward the bit end of the shank is effected simultaneously with a concomitant radial expansion of the screw gripping end of the jaw assembly as a function of a single manual manipulation to permit the positionment of a screw head in driving engagement with the bit. Following such screw head positionment, the jaw assembly automatically undergoes a reversal of the aforestated compound movement to positively restrain the screw head against movement relative to the bit.
Description
bit end of the screwdriver unencumbered for normal use.
I claim:
1. ln combination with a screwdriver having a handle, shank and screw engaging bit; a screw holding attachment, comprising; means concentrically mounting a screw gripping jaw assembly on said shank for axial and radial movement relative thereto; said jaw assembly having a screw head engaging end remote from said handle; first biasing means for biasing said jaw assembly axially in the direction of said handle and radially expanding said screw head engaging end; and said first named means including cam means engaging the outer periphery of said jaw assembly and second biasing means biasing said cam means axially in the direction of said handle for radially contracting the screw head engaging end thereof, whereby manual movement of said cam means in, opposition to said second biasing means permits expansion of the screw head engaging end of said jaw assembly under the influence of said first biasing means for the positionment of a screw head on said bit in position to be gripped by said jaw assembly upon release of said cam means.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said first biasing means includes two distinct springs.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said second biasing means includes a single spring.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said first named means further includes jaw anchor means positioned intermediate said cam means and said handle; said jaw assembly including a plurality of jaws having engaging fuleral surfaces intermediate said cam means and jaw anchor; each said jaw including an integral extension projecting through an oversize opening in said jaw anchor in the direction of said handle; and one of said spring means of said first biasing means engaging each said jaw extension on the handle side of said jaw anchor.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said single spring is a tension spring interconnecting said jaw anchor and cam means.
6. The combination of claim 4 wherein the outer surfaces of said jaws are generally convergent in the direction of the bit end of said shank; and said cam means includes an arcuate opening telescoped over said jaws whereby said single spring biases said cam means in the direction of said jaw anchor for contracting the screw head engaging end of said jaw assembly.
7. The combination of claim 6 wherein the inner and outer surfaces of said jaws are substantially parallel; and each said jaw includes a plurality of screw head engaging recesses axially spaced along the inner screw engaging surfaces thereof whereby screw heads of varying diameters may be positively anchored against movement relative to said bit.
