Abstract
851,318. Sawing ; severing by grinding. RUSSELL & SONS Ltd., S. July 15, 1959 [July 30, 1958], No. 24505/58. Classes 60 and 145. A machine for severing lengths from bars, tubes or the like comprises means for feeding the work between the jaws of a vice 15, 16, a rotary saw or grinding wheel 13 mounted on a pivoted head 12 and a stop 34 which is contacted by the leading end of the work to initiate closing of the vice and is mounted on the head so that as the head pivots to move the tool 13 through the work the stop moves out of alignment with the work to allow the severed length to fall freely to a shoot 18. The work is loaded from a rack 26 on to a roller track 19 by arms 28 operated by a pneumatic cylinder 29 and a rod 30 and is moved along the track by a carriage 20 coupled by a cable 23 to a reversible pneumatic motor 25, the grip of the vice being sufficient to overcome the motor so that it is constantly in action and feeds the work forward as soon as the vice is released. The stop 34 is mounted on a spindle 38 extending from the head 12 and comprises a micrometer gauge 36 engaged by a peg 40 in one of several holes 39 in the spindle and a spring-loaded push rod 46 which, when the leading end of the work pushes it in flush with the end of the gauge 36, operates a switch controlling supply of pneumatic pressure to the vice. If the leading end of the work has not been cut square, the rod 46 is not pushed in sufficiently to initiate a cutting cycle. The vice may comprise a fixed but adjustable jaw 15 and a movable jaw 16 operated by a diaphragm or both jaws may be movable by separate cylinders As the vice closes, it operates a switch which controls a valve 43 supplying pressure to a cylinder and dashpot 42 to pivot the head 12 and tool 13 into engagement with the workpiece and when the cut has been made a switch 44 operated through an adjustable link 50 from the rod 42a resets the valve 43 to withdraw the tool. As the tool moves up, another switch 45 is operated to open the vice and the work will immediately be fed forward again to contact the stop 34. When the last portion of the workpiece has been fed between the jaws of the vice, the carriage 20 operates a switch to reverse the motor 25 until the carriage reaches the outer end of the track 19 and actuates a valve and a switch to cause the arms 28 to load another workpiece and again reverse the motor 25. The motor 25 may alternatively be controlled by a manually-operable valve 32. The tool is driven by an electric motor 14 and an enclosed nylon belt and a spring-loaded guide 33 directs the end of the work into the vice jaws. In a modification, the reversible pneumatic motor 25 for the carriage 20 may be replaced by a reversible electric motor and a magnetic clutch, the clutch being automatically disengaged during the loading and cutting periods.
