PACKING-PLATE FOR RAlSlNS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,013, dated October 4, 1887.

Be it known that I, TRUMAN 0. WHITE, of Fresno, Fresno county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Packing- Plates for Raisins; and I hereby declare the.

following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the same.

My invention relates to a device for packing raisins; and it consists of a plate having depressions made in its surface, which plate forms the bottom of the preliminary packingbox and serves to hold the raisins in a certain position, so that when the box is reversed and the raisins are placed in the case for shipment those which were in the bottom of the preliminary box will form the top layer in the shipping-case.

In the accompanying drawing I have shown the construction of my packing-plate in perspective. It consists of a board or plate, A, of the size of the case in which the raisins are to be packed. The surface of this board or plate is countersunk or indented with concave depressions B, as shown, and when raisins are tobe packed this is put into a foursided frame which is of the same size as the raisin-box. This plate forms the. bottom of the frame, and the raisins which are to become the top layer in the case after completion are packed into these depressions one at a time, where they will remain in a perfectly regular form, while the remainder of the raisins are packed upon the top, so as to make up the required number to fill the box. form the bottom and sides of the final packing box is laid over this case, which is then reversed above the raisin-box and the raisins are pressed down into the box. The false bot tom with the depressions being then removed will leave the layers which form the top of the box in proper form and in regular position, thus greatly improving the appearance of the raisins and increasing their value. By this peculiar construction of the plate with the concave or dish-shaped depressions the raisins will be nicely formed or shaped and will not stick, but will allow the packing-plate to be easily removed without disturbing them.

It will be manifest that the plate may be made of any suitable or desirable material, and the depressions may be made in any form or with any arrangement of lines or figures, so as to have the top layer within the box rep resenting the same design.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A packing-plate for raisins, having its surface countersunk or provided with concave depressions, said plate being adapted to form the bottom of a preliminary packing-box and to hold the raisins which form the top layer of the shipping-box, substantially as herein described.
