SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,727, dated September 27, 1887.

Application filed March 10, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. CLOUGH, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Photograph-Cards, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures onthe drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object to provide cards-as, for instance, photographcardswith a stiffening device to prevent the same from being warped or bent out of true.

The invention consists in acard made of two i 5 layers or sheets of paper, or other suitable material, combined with a metallic or rigid stiffener interposed between the piles or layers of material, as will be described. The card may be made of one thick piece of paper having its edges split, to thereby subserve the same purpose as when composed of two independent layers secured together. The stiffener is preferabl-y made of metal out in strip form, and suitably bent, so that one part of the strip may 2 5 enter between the different layers or plies of material andanother part overlie the edges of the material to form a metallic edge for the card.

Many forms of stiffening-strips may be de- 3c vised to carry out the essential feature of this invention, which I consider come within the scope of this invention.

Figure 1 shows in plan view a photographcard provided with a stiffening strip embody- 5 ing this invention; Figs. 2, 3, and 4, sectional details of a portion of a card, each showing a different form of stiffening-strip.

The card a is preferably made of two inde pendent pieces or layers of paper, or other o material, united together, or it may be made of one thick piece of material having its edges split or separated in two parts.

The stiffening-strip herein shown is composed of metal, or other rigid substance, bent to form a flat portion, as 2, which enters between the different plies or layers of the card and the overlying-edge portion. The flat portion 2 is preferably corrugated longitudinally, or has barbed points to penetrate each layer of card, and the edge portion may be bent in Serial No. 230,362. (No model.)

many difierent ways and yet form a metallic edge for the card.

In Fig. 3 I have shown the material forming the edge of the stiffeningstrip as bent upward, as at 3, to form an edge for one part of the card, and bent downward, as at at, to form an edge for the other part of the card, so that the two pieces 3 4 together form a metallic edge for the card.

In Fig. 2 I have shown the stiffening-strip as bent into tubular form, as at 5, to thus serve as an edge for the card.

In Fig. 4'1 have shown the edge as formed by merely bending the outer portion of the strip downward to lie against the edge of the lower part of the card, and then bending the strip over upon one face. of the card and thereby form a metallic edge for the body part of the card.

By interposing a corrugated strip between the different layers or plies of the card the latter will not become warped and bent out of true.

It is obvious from. the foregoing that the form ofstiffening-strip may be variously modified and yet come within the scope of my in- Vention.

If it should be considered preferable, I may employ a corrugated metallic or other rigid or unyielding strip extending from edge to edge of the card.

. I claimv 1. The card a and the anti warping or stiffening strip having the flat portion 2, substantially incorporated with and inclosed by the card, as set forth. 7

2. The card a and the stiffening or antiwarping strip having the fiat portion 2, firmly incorporated with and inclosed by the card at its edge, and having a projecting portion covering the edge of the card, substantially as described. I
