To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, HOWARD B. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing ,at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Cleats; and l hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specilicatipn.
rlhis invention is a novel cleat especially designed for use in securing in position sheets or strips of paper, felt or composite material such as are commonly used for sheathing and rooting buildings and the like; and its object is to provide cleats which can be readily applied where desired and can be either spaced apart, as desired, or may be placed in line close together to form a practically continuous bond; .and which cleats will not only bind the lapped portions of the sheets securely together and in place but will also protect the edges of the outermost lapped sheets or strips.
rlhe invention consists in a. novel cleat, preferably stamped from sheet metal, and which is light but so stiened by peculiar ribs and bends that it-is substantially rigid and will securely bind the lapped portion of the sheets and exclude :moisture :trom beneath such cleat.

The cleat is preferably stamped outl ot sheet metal and may be made or any desired length, being preferably about ve inches long. rllhe main body l ot the cleat is fiat, but it is provided along one side with a longitudinal lL-shaped Harige the vertical portion 2 of which dange is adapted to abut against the edge of the outer sheetV of material S upon which the cleat is placed, while the lower portion 3 of this ILshaped llange'is adapted to rest upon the under sheet of material S2. The part 2 of the flange aords a ready means for positlonlng the cleat accurately over the lapped portions of the sheets and against the edge of the outer lapped sheet and greatly facilitates the application of the cleat. Such flange also protects the edge of the sheet from the elements and thereby greatly enhances the durability of the exposed edges of such sheet. The main body 1 of the cleat is also provided with an integral longitudinal ribs which may be stamped from the metal of the body and preferably eX- 'tends adjacent the edge of the body remote from the flange 2. Said rib is preferably concavo-convex in cross section and considerably Wider than it is high; the top part of this rib being approximately flat and broad enough to afford a good bearing for the heads of the nails N by which the cleat is secured in position. The ends of rib e are deflected at 'right angles to the main part thereof as shown at 5, said end portions 5 extending across the body 1 and down part 2 of the Flange and merging into theI part 3 of the ange as indicated-in the drawings. When the cleats are to be lapped one end of each cleat may be .slightly shouldered as at 6 to overlap the end 7 of the adjacent cleat, as indicated in Figs. land 5. 'lhese cleats can be readily positioned by laying them upon the outer lapped sheet` and alining them thereon by bringing their danges 2 against the edge S oit such sheet, and thus no time is lost in properly and similarly locating the cleat in alinernent upon. the edge of the sheet. Suchcleats not only bind the upper layer S, but also bind the lower layer S2 and also protect tlieedge of the sheet S as stated.
lfhat l claim is:
l. A cleaticomprising a metal body hav'm lii@ ing a longitudinal down-turned flange on one side and a raised longitudinal rib at its opposite side parallel With said flange, said rib having end portions extending transversely of ,the strip.
2. A cleat for the purpose speeied cornprising a metal strip having a dovvn-turned flange on one edge and a longitudinally disposed rib adjacent its other edge, said rib having end portions extended across the strip and down the vertical portion of the flange.
3. A cleat for thepurpose specified comprising a metal strip having an L-shaped flange on one edge and a longitudinally disposed rib adjacent its other edge, said rib having its end portions extended transversely of the strip and down the vertical portion of the flange to the base portion thereofj the rib being perforated for the passage of nails.
4. A cleat for the .purpose speciied comprising a metal strip having an lL-shaped Hange on one edge and a longitudinally disposed rib adjacent its other edge, said rib being concave-convent in cross section and mennen formed integral with the strip by stamping it out of the body thereof, and said rib having its end portions extended transversely across the strip and down the vertical portion of the flange to the base portion thereof.
5. lhe herein described cleat comprising a sheet metal strip having an L-shaped flange on one edge and a longitudinally disposed rib adjacent its other edge, said rib having its end portions extended angularly across the strip and down the vertical portion of the flange into the base portion thereof, said rib being flat and concavo-convex in cross section and having a broad top surface. said rib being formed integral with the strip by stamping it out of the body of the strip; the rib being also perforated for the passage of nails.
