- FRANCIS SCHALES TULL, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
CAR-BERTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,429, dated September 27 1887.
i Application led January 26, 1887. Serial No. 225.572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANoIs SoHALEs TULL, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Berths; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to berths or beds for sleepingcars, the object being to provide a berth (adapted equally well for an upper or a lower berth) which may be readily and conveniently folded and concealed within a suitable recess, opening,or compartment at the side wall of a car.
rlhe invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective one of my improved berths applied to a car and'unfoldcd for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the berth folded or concealed, and Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate parts in detail.
A represents an opening or recess formed in the side of a car to receive the berth. rIhis opening is provided with a cover, B.
The berth or bed consists of a series of longitudinal slats, C, hinged or otherwiseflexibly secured together. I prefer to connect the slats together by yielding straps c, of leather, woven fabric, or any other suitable material. The in- (No model.)
ner slat of the series is connected to the side of the car within the opening A.
Ateach end of the berth is provided a support, D, made of Wood or metal, and preferably attached at their inner ends to the side'of the car, so as to be folded in a horizontal plane within the opening A below the berth, and 4o provided at their outer ends with vertical legs or suspending-chains. Each of these supports is joined at one or more points, d, to permit each support to be folded upon itself before folding the whole within the opening.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
-The combination, with a car formed with an opening, recess, or compartment, A, of a berth consisting of a series of parallel slats connected together by flexible connections and adapted to be rolled up, as described, and end supports adapted to be independently folded each upon itself, so that they may be concealed below the rolled berth, the inner side of the berth and the inner ends of the supports being secured withi n the opening A.
In testimonywhereof I have signed this speciication in the presence of two subscribing wit- -60 nesses.
FRANCIS SCI-I ALES TULL.
