Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
LOUIS KOLLOFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR CLOSING GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,001, dated November 25, 1862.
.T0 all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, Louis KoLLoEE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Closing Gates, Doors, te. 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, gures and letters of reference thereon, making part of this specification.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 showsa front elevation of a gate with my improvement for closing the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the gate closed. Fig. 3 is a sidel elevation showing the gate as open.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the drawings.
Myinvention consists in arranging and combining with a gate or door an inclined pin or bar pivoted so as to reduce the friction and so placed as to close the gate or door automatically and with certainty and without liability to get out of order.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof.
A represents the post of a gate, having the pin or male part of the hinge I) secured thereto, and is supported by the base C and I, braces H, and arch F.
B is agate,of ordinary construction, to which is secured the female part of the hinge.
E is the latch, d is the staple, and f the catch.
To the vertical part A, I attach an arm, a,
of the desired length, (projecting in the direction the gate is to be opened,) which is provided with a socket or step.
To the gate-frame B is attached a projection, c, which is provided with a pointed screw, b. I then make a bar, G, of the desired length, having one end conically pointed, which is inserted in the bar a on the post A, while the other end is counter-sunk to receive the screw b in the projecting lug o, as plainly shown in all the drawings.
rI he operation will be as follows: The gate or door being opened will move the inclined bar G, so as to create a powerful leverage, while at the same the Weight of the gate rests wholly upon the pivots of the inclined bar G, while the hinges only serve to hold the gate in proper position, thereby greatly reducing the friction upon the hinges, and upon the gate being released the leverage of the bar G and weight of the gate will close it with certainty.
The screw b is for the purpose of adjusting the gate to the desired height upon the hinges D and pivoted bar G. i I claim- In combination with a gate or door, the socket on the jamb or post A, the bar G, and adjusting mechanism b c, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
LOUIS KOLLOFF.
