CHAFE ANDLOOP FOR HARNESS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,910, dated September 13, 1887.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDW. B. BRADFORD, of Glaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Combination Ghafe and Loop for Harness, of which the following is a specification.

This improvement is particularly adapted for use on heavy truck-harness in connection with side straps, leisure straps, lug-straps, back-straps, and, in fact, in any place where the strap returns or bends back upon itself.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strap and ring with my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a verticalsection of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of my combination chafe and loop detached.

A A are the two portions of a strap of any of the styles above mentioned, bent so as to re turn upon itself.

My device consists of the loop portion B, the connecting portion 0, and chafe portion D, the last bent back upon itself and provided with the transverse slits or openings D and D, the former near the connection 0 and the latter near the free end of the chafe portion, the entire device being made integral. The entire strap passes down through the loop 13 and out through the opening D, down around the outside of thechafe D, in through the opening D, and up through the loop B, all as shown in the drawings. The ringEpasscs, as usual, through the chafe, thus protecting the part a of the strap.

The entire device, including both the chafe and loop, is made of leather.

By means of my device the loop is prevented from sliding down the strap, thus allowing the chafe to turn around and get out of place, so that the wear (from the ring) would come on the strap to its injury.

I am aware that chafe irons and guards have been constructed which consist of a plate provided with one or more loops on one or both of the sides thereof, and it is not my purpose to so claim my invention as to cover such constructions. In myinvention the loop embraces both portions of the strap, said portions passing through slits on opposite sides of the chafe, said slits being made in the body of the chafe, which, being of leather, provides considerable friction. By this means the chafe is kept in place, the loop is prevented fromsliding down the strap, the ring cannot slip out of position, and no wear can possibly come upon the strap to be protected. The ring is kept in position because the chafebroadens toward the portions next the loop, so that it is wider than the inside diameter of the ring.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described combination chafe. and loop for harness, consisting of the loop portion B, connecting portion 0, and chafe portion D, provided with the openings D D, consisting of slits made transversely in the body of the chafe portion, said chafe portion being made broader at its two parts next the loop than at the portion passing through the ring, the entire device being made of leather, and all made integral and constructed substantially as set forth, and to operate as described.
