  • the point 47 of the counterknife 43 arrives between the shank extending to the workpiece, and the shank of the needle thread loop located on the looper and extending to the needle. If now the thread cutter 42 is moved on, the lateral arm 52 of the cutting blade 44 will rest against the stop 117', so that the cutter is closed and the shank of the needle thread loop formed by the needle thread 119 and extending to the workpiece, as wellas the looper thread 23 are cut off. After this, the workpiece 120 can be removed with all thread ends located on its underface. After cutting off the threads 23, 119, the knife carrier 32 assisted by the spring 69, is returned into its initial position (FIG. 4).
  • the needle 12 pierces the workpiece 120, while the initial thread end depending from the eye of the needle 12, remains beneath the throat plate 17 when the needle moves into its top position.

  • a thread carrying looper having a blade formed with a transverse eye for delivering thread from one side of said blade to the other side, a thread guiding groove in the front face of said blade and ending in said eye, the rear face of said blade having a thread guarding groove, means for operating said looper along a substantially elliptical path encircling said needle, a looper thread take-up mechanism, means for preventing said eye from withdrawing a relatively short initial end of said looper thread by said looper thread take-up mechanism after a renewed beginning of sewing, said means including a looper thread clamping means located between said looper and said looper thread take-up mechanism, and a brush cooperating with said rear face of said looper blade for guiding said initial end of said looper thread depending from said looper eye into said thread guarding groove during the first forward motion of said looper after a renewed beginning of sewing.
