EMMA J. GOOCH, CF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,582, dated .August 23, 1887.
Application filed May 2, 1887. Serial No. 36,787. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA J. GoocH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin- Supporters, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of napkinsupporters which is applied to the neck of the wearer in front and under the chin; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of the device, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had, and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section ofthe same -on the line x sv oi Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the drawings, the letter A represents a thin, flat plate or piece of metal; or, if preferred, it may be made of suitably curved or bent wire, so as to adapt itself to the shape of the neck of the wearer, it being retained in place by means of two curved bars arranged at right angles to the strip A and depending therefrom, as will be hereinafter explained.
To the outer face of the strip or plate of metal A are secured, by means of solder or any suitable fastening, one or more napkin-holding clasps, B, (in this example th ree being showm) the upper or top portions of which lie flush with the upper edge ofthe curved metal strip A. The clasp B is constructed in two parts, one of which is fixed and the other movable, the fixed one being secured to the curved metal strip above mentioned.
Upon the upper end of the xed portion of the clasp B, and formed integrally with the same, is a hollow tube, through which a lug or pin, b', is passed, said pin having first been passed through a hole made in integrallyformed flanges, b2, which are curved at their lower edges, at the upper end of the movable part of the clasp B, and which are bent over at right angles to the face of the clasp, said holes in the ilanges b2 being caused to come in alignment with the hollow ends of the tube b, the pin or lug b thus pivotally securing or hinging the upper movable and lower fixed portion of the clasp B together at that point, and at the same time forming a fulcrum upon which the movable portion of the clasp B articulates to close down upon and fasten, or be raised and release, the end of the napkin, which is designed to be inclosed between them. The clasps may be made of any desired form suitable for the purpose intended.
Bigidly secured to the outer face and lower end of the fixed portion or section of the clasp B is a suitable stop, c, against the upper or free end of which the lower end of the movable part or section of the clasp B contacts and incloses the napkin, as before stated, and by which it is held between the tiXed and movable sections of the clasp B.
To the inner side and centrally-curved part of the plate or strip A, and arranged at right angles to said strip, are permanently secured the upper angular ends of two depending curved thin strips or bars of metal, D, which serve the purpose of detachably securing the device to the person of the wearer by inserting them between the collar and the neck when occasion arises for its use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leiters Patent, is-
l. An improved napkinsupporter consisting of the curved strip or plate A, having the clasps B secured thereto, said clasps being formed in two paris or'sections, one tiXcd and the other movable, and connected to each other by means of pins b' at their upper ends, and having stop c at their lower ends, against which the lower end of the movable section of clasp B contacts or snaps, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the plate or stop A and depending curved bars D, of the clasp B, constructed substantially as described, whereby the napkin inclosed between the clasp B is held or released therefrom, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMMA J. GOOCH.
