Description

luidt itir ABRAHAM SHENFI'ELD, or NEW-YORK, N. u
Letters Patent No. 112,857, dated March 21, 1871.
INIPRVEMYENT IN BUCKLES FOR SUSPENDERS.`
The Schedule referred to in these Letters `Patent and making ofthe umm To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ABRAHAM SHENFIELD, of the city and State of New York, have invented und made a, new and use'ful Improvement in Buckles for Suspenders, Sac., and the'fcllowing is declared to be a cor' rect description of the seme. -v
Suspender buckles or clasps have been mede with a. swinging clamping-jaw, to retain the strap between itself undy the body. of the buckle. In these cases the clamping-janv has either come at the back of the suspender or strap, and been inconvenient of access, or else the strap itself has come in front of the divided loops or suspender ends.
My invention is made to -remove the objectionable features of the buckles before made, by constructing thefclamp so that it is operated at the outer side of the buckle, md the suspender strap passes down next the person and behind the double'loops or suspender ends, so thatthese can be freely unhooked-from-the buckle, and when the parts are in place on the. person the suspender strap lies smooth und nearlystraight against the person, and .the ordinary loose l end of the suspender is held buck in 'place by the suspendel' ends coming on the outside thereof.
yIn the drawing- Figure Iris an elevation of the buckle complete; Figure 2 is :t yertical'section of the buckle and strap; and Figures 3 and 4'show the two parts of the buckle separated.,
The body a of the buckleis mede more or less ornamental, and with a cross-bar, 2, between the openings 3 and ebend 5 is a. hook for the ring-b of fthe suspender ends c c, that een be unlocked from 5 when The suspender strap d i's to be introducen from the back through the opening 3, thencepasses over the bar 2, und ugnin to the back of the Abuckle through the opening 4, so that all'the parte of the buckle ex,- cept the bar 2 are. in front of the said strap d.
The clamping-portion e of the buckle is attached by pins passing through ears 6 6 on the edges of the body c, and the clamping-edge 7 acts to compress the strap d between the ber 2 and itself, and thereby hold said strap firmly.
The clamp e can be turned up to release the strup,`- and both this strap and the hook 5 and-suspender` ends c come outside the strap or snspenderd, so that the letter can lie next the person.
I clairn as my inventionl The suspender buckle, `formed of the body a, with openings 3 nud-4 for tbe suspender, at the sides of the `bar2, and the hook 5, for the ring or attchment of the suspender ends, in combination with the swinging clamp e, connected tothe body a, as and for the purposes set forth. l
Signed by me this 5th day of December, A. D. 187 0.
' A. SHEN FIELD.
