HORATIO N. MAOOMBER, OF IVALKERTON, INDIANA.
WIRE-TWISTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,480, dated August 16, 1887. Application filed May 13, 1887. Serial No.238,0 l7. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORATIO N. llIACOMBER, of Valkerton, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Twisting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part ofthis specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in wire-twisting devices; anditconsistsin atwisting device which is to be used in the making of picket fences, and which consists of a suitable metallic plate having an opening in one side for the ready insertion of the two wires, a circular slot which extends partly around the plate for one of the wires to catch in, and a short slot, which extends toward the center of the plate, andin which both of the wires catch while being twisted together, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a wire-twisting device by means of which two wires can be twisted tightly together while in position upon a picket fence, and thus secure the pickets in place.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of a wire-twisting device which embodies my invention.
A represents the body of the twister, which consists of a suitable metallic plate or casting of any desired diameter and thickness, and from which the arms B radiate in the usual manner. In one side of the body A is formed a suitable opening, 0, of any desired size, so as to readily catch over both of the wires without giving the operator the trouble of catching 40 the wires in his hands and guiding them into i position. Leading from the opening 0, made in one side of the plate, is the circular slot D, which extendspartly around the plate, and connecting with the inner end of the circular slot D and extending toward the center of the plate is the short slot G. One of the wires is held in the circular slotD, while the other is caught in the short slot G when the wires are first inserted. \Vhen the operator turns thetwister, the wire in the short slot G remains in position; but the one which is caughtinthe slot Dgradually moves up the slot toward the opening 0 as the twister is turned until it catches in the slot G, when they are both twisted together. This slot G holds the wires so that they can not slip past each other, and hence when the twister is turned they are twisted tightly to gether, so as to hold the pickets in position. The wire being held at or near the center of the twister, the operation of twisting them is made much lighter and easier than is the case where the slots extend past the center.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. Awire-twisterhavingacontinuous groove, D G, the part G of the groove being made to extend at an angle to part D, substantially as shown.
2. A wire-twister consisting of the body A, provided With arms 13, and having an opening, 0, upon one side, and the two slots DG, which extend at an angle to each other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORATIO N. MACOMBER.
