R. HOLBON.
PENCIL HOLDER FOR SLATE FRAMES. No. 368,289. Patented Aug. 16, 1887.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT HOLBON, OF ALPENA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MONROE KLOGK,
OF SAME PLACE.
PENCIL-HOLDER FOR SLATE-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3E8,289, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed July 7,1890.
Serial No. 207,324. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT HoLBoN, of Alpena, in the county of Alpena and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, form-- ing a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a slate to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a part of a slateframe.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the draw ings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and inexpensive device for carrying a slate-pencil in connection with a slate.
The invention consists of the combination of parts, including their construction, substantialiy as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I take an or dinary slate having a wooden frame, A, and bore one of the sides or ends of the frame longitudinally, partly through the side, to form a receptacle, B, of sufficient diameter and length to receive an ordinary slate-pencil.
To the side of the frame A adjoining that in which the receptacle is formed is pivoted a metallic spring, 0, having its free end a reduced in width and bent inward toward the frame, and adapted to be received in the hole forming the pencil-receptacle. \Vhen the pen- 5 oil is in place in the receptacle, the free end of the spring is raised, swung over the frame, and allowed to drop into the pencil-receptacle over the end of the pencil, as shown in Fig. 2. WVhen it is desired to remove the pencil from 1,0 the receptacle, the spring is lifted and turned to one side, and the mouth of the hole is turned downward, allowing the pencil to drop out of its own gravity.
By means of my improvement the slate-pen- 5 oil may always be carried with the slate, and it is prevented from being broken in carrying.
I do not limit or confine myself to the employment of any particular kind of spring for retaining the pencil in the receptacle, as any 5) spring or retaining device which will hold the pencil in the receptacle will answer the purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 55 Patent, is-
The slateframe provided with the pencilreceptacle and the spring pivoted to said frame, and having its free end reduced in width and bentinward toward the frame, adapting 60 it to be received into the said receptacle, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT IIOLBON.
