UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
OSCAR MUSSINAN, JR, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EBERH ARD FABER, OF PORT RICHMOND, NE\V YORK.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,160, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed June 2, 1887. Serial No. JI0,0fi8.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, OSCAR MUSSINAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State ofNew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pen cil-Holders, of which the following is aspccification.
This invention relates to improvements in pencil, lead, or crayon holders, as set forth in the following specification and claim and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa section in the plane a: m, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane y 3 Fig. i. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a pencil-holder. Fig. 4isaview similarto Fig. 3, the clamping-sleeve being removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification, part of the device being broken away.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a sheath of wood or other soft material, having slits c at one end. A sleeve, D, is secured in a fixed position on the sheath in rear of the slits, and is provided with an annular projecting bead, constituting a stop, E.
By making the sleeve D of metal or similar suitable material said sleeve will strengthen the sheath A. The free extremity of the slit end is shown as being tapered or conical.
F is a clamping-sleeve formed with a conical end, having a screw-thread, f. Said thread f is adapted to fit over the tapered or conical extremity of the slit end. XVhcn the screwthread 1" is in firm engagement with said tapered or conical extremity, the slit end will be compressed about the pencil crayon or lead B, as seen in Fig. 1, and said, pencil will thus be held securely in place. To release the lead B the screw-thread f is disengaged from the tapered extremity of the slit end and the conical end of the clamping-sleeve is moved away from the slit end 0, thus allowing said slit end to relax its hold on the lead. The lead is then free to be moved in the sheath.
A flange, G, on the clamping-sleeve, is adapted to engage the stop E and to prevent the clamping sleeve from coming off the (No model.)
sheath. Said clamping-sleeve, however, has enough motion on the sheath to clamp or to release the slit end.
A cover, H, such as an indiarubloer sleeve, can be provided for the clamping-sleeve F, thus preventing the fingers of the operator from coming into contact with the clampingsleeve, which may be objectionable in case the sleeve F is formed of metal. By having the screwthrcad f at the end of the clampingsleeve the remaining part of the clampingsleeve can be made smooth, or provided with ornamental beads I, or given such shape that said sleeve can be agreeably and comfortably held and grasped by thcopcrator. By having the screw-thread f of hard material, such as metal, and the slit end 0 of soft material, such as wood, said thread f will compress or cut into said slit end, so as to form a screwthrcad therein, which screwthread will conform accurately to the screw-thread f. The labor of forming a screw-thread on the slit end 0 is thus saved, as such screw-thread will be formed by the application of the thread f to the slit end 0 while said screw-threadf and said tapered end are in engagement.
I do not broadly claim a wooden sheath having a slitted cnd,and a clamping-sleeve having a screw-thread engaging said slitted end, as such is not my invention.
Vhat I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the sheath A, having the end slits, a, of the sleeve 1), secured in a fixed position on the sheath, and having the annular stop 19, and the clamping-sleeve F, having at one end the screw-thread f and at the other end the inwardly-projccting flange G, adapted to engage the said annular stop, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
o. MUSSINAN, JR. [1. s]
