FILM DISPENSER This invention relates to an improvement in film dispenser and deals particularly with a simple enclosure for containing a roll of film such as paper, wax paper, plastic and the like and deals particularly with a structure which acts as a support for the roll of film, and from which the film may be dispensed.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION During recent years the use of formed plastic sheeting has greatly increased. Many different types of machines for forming plastic film are being produced. In general, these machines heat the film to the degree in which it becomes plastic and then form the shapes from the film by the use of vacuum dies and the like. In many instances the formed plastic is marginally secured to a sheet of paperboard to form a bubble or blister enclosing a product to be displayed.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention resides in the provision of a combination including an elongated generally semi-cylindrical enclosure of channel-shaped cross-section having inwardly extending cylindrical bosses on opposite ends thereof for supporting a roll of paper, wax paper, plastic film or the like. The bosses are designed to enter the ends of the hollow roll and to rotatably support the roll so that the film may be drawn therefrom. The body is formed with coplanar marginal flanges extending along the ends and one longitudinal side of the receptacle, these flanges being designed to be secured to a supporting sheet of paperboard or the like. The fourth side of the receptacle preferably includes a flange which is slightly offset from the plane of the other flanges and extending the length of the receptacle so that the film to be dispensed may pass between the offset flange and the paperboard backing. The offset flange or the edge of the backing panel may serve as a cutting edge for cutting the film to suitable length.
A feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a film dispenser which may be produced on machinery which is readily available and which can be produced at low cost. The vacuum forming apparatus as well as the apparatus for attaching the marginal edge of the formed plastic to a backing sheet is readily available. By providing suitable apertures in the backing sheets, the dispenser may be supported on a wall. The dispenser may also be readily held in one hand while removing film from the roll with the other hand.
These and other objects and novel features of the present invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the film dispenser in its completed form.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view through the dispenser, the position of the section being indicated by the line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device, the position of the section being indicated by the line 33 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a partial longitudinal sectional view showing the drawing in modified form of construction.
The film dispenser A is designed to support a roll B of film wound upon an elongated hollow core which extends throughout the length of the roll of film. The film is indicated by the numeral 11. The dispenser is described as it appears in FIG. 2 of the drawings.
The dispenser A includes a pair of substantially parallel walls 12 and 13 which are connected by a substantially semicylindrical wall 14. End panels 15 close the ends of the body portion. A lip or flange 16 extends outwardly in an inclined position relative to the lower edge of the wall 13, and terminates in an end 17 which is slightly spaced from the plane of the lower edges of the wall 12 and end walls 15.
A flange 19 extends outwardly from the lower end of the longitudinal wall 12 and similar flanges 20 extend outwardly from the end walls I The flanges 19 and 20 are on a common plane and are adapted for attachment to a backing sheet 21. The flanges l9 and 20 may be of a material which will adhere to the surface of the backing sheet by application of heat and pressure. Alternatively, adhesive 22 may be applied to the flanges so that they may be secured in face contact with the backing card 21. The backing member 21 may be of stiff paperboard or the like.
The end panels 15 are formed to provide inwardly extending bosses 23 haveing generally cylindrical outer peripheries of proper diameter to engage into the hollow core 10 of the film roll B thus supported the film roll for rotation. If desired, these bosses may be formed in the end panels 15 after the film roll B has been inserted between the walls 15, the end walls being locally heated and formed into the roll ends. Alternatively, the end walls 15 A (see FIG. 4) may be provided with circular apertures 24 substantially equal in diameter to the inner diameter of the roll B, and an insert 25 may be inserted through each aperture 24 and into the end of the film roll. The insert 25 includes a substantially cylindrical wall 26 having a peripheral outwardly extending flange 27 which engages against the outer surface of the end wall 15 A and is secured thereto by adhesive, he'at sealing or the like. The insert 25 is shown as having a closed inner end 29, but this inner closure may be eliminated if desired.
A transversely elongated slot 30 may be provided in the backing member 21 to provide access to the periphery of the roll so that the roll may be rotated in a manner to feed the free end 31 of the film 11 through the elongated slot between the edge 17 of the flange 16 and the backing member 21. If the dispenser is held in the hand, the edge 33 of the backing member 21 may be used to tear the film. If the edge 17 of the flange 16 is used as the tearing edge, it may be necessary to rotate the roll slightly in order tofeed the end 31 of the film through the dispensing slot.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of construction and operation of my improvement in FILM DISPENSER; and while I have endeavored to set forth the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that obvious changes may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
