' mx w TTORNEY Patented Oct. 14, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT I QFEIC I I 2,613,879" I DISPENSER a William H. can, Jr., Kansas City, lira Application December 19, 1949, Serial No. 133,821
This invention relates to a device for dispensing desired lengths of metalfoil or other sheet material, such as wax paper.
An object of the invention is the provision of.- a dispensing device in the form of an elongated casing supportinga roll of metal foil therein, the
front wall of said casing being provided with a pair of elastic jaws which are compressed upon a width of the foil when a hinged closure is pressed into place so that the foil on the roll will be retained against shifting movement when asection "of the roll withdrawn from thecasing'is being torn off against a cutter carried by the closure. r
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device for dispensing desired sections from a roll of metal foil or the like in which'the free end of the material is clamped by resilient jaws of a metal foil or the like from a roll in a casing in' such a manner that the roll will be held against further dispensing action when a pull is exerted on the foil during severance of the selected section from the-roll of foil, said foil being retained against slippage by a pair of spaced jaws formed of rubber and between which the foil is withdrawn from said roll, pressure onthe jaws by amovable lid on the casing creating a clamping action on the foil.
This invention is best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification,- nevertheless, itv must be borne in mind that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, but is susceptible of such changes and modifications as shall define no material departure from the salient features as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings-- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my dispenser showing one form thereof.
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section of a modified form of the dispenser, showing the lid or closure in open position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical section of the form shown in Figure 2 with the lid closed and with the device invcondition for dispensing.
2Claims. (Cl. 24255.5)
2 1 Figure 4 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary vertical section of 'a' holder 'for a clamping means,
and .7
Figure 5 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary vertical section of a modified form of the clamping means shown in Figure 4 disclosing also a modified form of the closure.
Referring more particularly to Figure 1,it will be seen that a casing Ill, rectangular in cross section provides a housing'for a roll ll of metal foill2 which is cut-off in desired lengths fora purpose presently to be described. A spindle l3 upon which the fOiIliS wound has the opposite ends received by bearings l4 formed in. the end walls I5 of thecasing. The casing includes a front wall IS, a rear wall I1 and a bottom l8.
A lid forms a closure for the upper open portion of the casing and is hinged at 2| on the upper edge of the rear wall lli The front edge of the lid extends beyond the front wall l8 for the entire length of said lid. A downturned flange 23 which' terminates short of the length of the liddepends from the front free edge 22. A horizontal flange 24 formed integrally with the flange '23 projects forwardly from the lower edge of said flange. The free edge'of the flange 24 is rubber and'jhas its lower edge secured: to the upper edge'of'the front wall. The ends of the strip are'secured to front upper portions of the end'walls' (5. The strip has an elongated hori-' zontal slot 21 through which the foil from the roll II is threaded. upper edge of the front wall l6 falls short of the height of the end walls l5. When the clamping member 26 is secured in place on the top edge of the front wall It, the top edge of the upper jaw 28 of the clamping member will be located above the top edges of the end walls l5 so that when the lid 20 is lowered onto the jaw 28 and pressed downwardly, said jaw will clamp the foil against a jaw 29 of the clamping means.
In Figures 2 to 4 inclusive, there is illustrated a modified form of a holder or support for the clamping means 26,11. In this form, the upper edge 30 of the front wall IBa is bent inwardly and then downwardly as shown at 3| and thence upwardly at 32 to provide a transversely curved and elongated channel member to receive the It will be noted that the a lower edge of the clamping means 26a or the jaw 29a which is spaced from and below the jaw 28a. The elongated slot 21a between the jaws is adapted to receive the metal foil l2 as shown more particularly in Figure 3. The upper edge of the jaw 2811 projects above a horizontal plane passing through the upper edges of the end walls I5 for a purpose which will be explained presently.-
The operation bf 'my. dispensing. device illustrated in Figures 1 to hinclusive is as follows: The ends of the spindle 13 are placed in the bearings l4 supporting the roll ll of metal foil 12. The free end of the foil is threaded through the slot 21 in the clamping means 26 (Figure 1) orthe slot 21a in the clamping means 26a (Figures 2 to 4 inclusive). A sufiicient length of the foil is withdrawn through the-slot from the'roll and the lid or closure is pressed downwardly;
on the'top jaw 28 or 28a, whereby the foil is clamped against slippage between the jaws. It will beinoted that the jaw 28 or 28a extends above the to edges of the end walls l5 and since the jaws 23 and 29 or 28a and 29a are formedof elastic materials, thepressu'reon the lid 20 will compress the jaws firmly'ag'ainst the foil to hold said 'foil in position 'whenthe'projeoted section is sheared-off against the teeth 2:5 on the horizontal r 'ef'erringflto Figured a modified form of the dispensing r'neansfis' shown. In this'form,. the front tvallI 35.has an enlarged upper edge 36 providedwithfa longitudinal groove't'l. Itis to be borne 'in'mihd that onlythe lid 20a and the front wiallf'o'f the housing; as ill'ustrat'edfin Figure 1 is disclosed; IA'n elongated jaw 38 is fixed in the groove Stand has its upper free edge throughout thelength thereof adapted to contact and support the metal foil 'l '2. j
The licl ilfia has an enlarged free edge 40 with a flat under surface 4 I Shearing teeth 42 project forwardly'i roin the reducededge 43 of' the'enlarge'd portion ofltheifront edge of the lid. The enlarged free edge 40 of the lid has a longitudinal groove i l 'irl' whici'ris fixed the upper jaw 45. In
thisfor'm, the jaws are independent of each other, so that when the lid20disr'aised, the jaw 45 will be, raised, while the jaw 38'remains in place in the enlargement 36 at the upper edge of the front wall 35 of the housing or casing'for'the roll H of the'foil, No threading is required in the modification illustrated in, Figure 5; e
The foil i2 may be 'to'rn-offjfrom the roll H. in
any suitablelengtlis. The lengths of the foil may .beemployed'fol-wrapping various) kinds of foods before storing such'foods in a refrigerator to prevent the" odors of such'f0ods from affecting the flavors of other foods. The sections of the foil' 'may also be employed in various cooking processes. The foil is manufactured preferably hinged to the upper edge of the rear wall with theopposite. freeedge of said lid being provided with a cutting edge projecting outwardly from "theupper edgeof the front wall, the front wall -.having less height than the rear and end walls,
said upper edge of the front wall having an integrally formed longitudinal channel member at the inner face of said ,wall, a flat strip of elastic. material having the loWer'ldngitudinal edge fixed insaid channel member and provided with a longitudinal slot to receive t he free end of theffoil for dispensingflpurposjes, said slot dividing the strip into. a pair of compressibleijawaone of the jaws projecting above a planev passing through the upper-edges of the rear andend walls so that p when the lid is pressed downwardly on the strip the jaws willclaifnp thefoil against slippage.
2. A dispenser forinetal foil or the like comprising a casing adapted to house a roll of foil and having a front wall, a rear wall and parallel end-walls, a lid. having one longitudinal edge hinged totheupperedge of the rear wall with the opposite free edge. ofis aidlid being provided with I a cuttingjedge"projecting outwardly from the upper edge otthe front wall, the front wall having less height thanthe rear and en d walls, a pair of spacedelas ig jaws mounted upon the front wall,
extending longitudinally and projecting above the upper edge thereof; adapted to receive the free end of the foil therebetween and to be. clamped onto thefoil When the free end of the lid is pressed into closed position to prevent slippage of the foil when a'projecting portionof the foil is sheared "err by. the cutting edge'.
