Description
G. D. M DONALD TOILET PAPER HOLDER July 24,1951
Filed Dec. 9, 1950 INVENTOR.
Patented July 24, 1951 a Tomm -{PAPER Hernia George D. McDonald, Los Angele s, Calif; assignor to Hall-Mack Company, Los Angeles, Calif., a corporation of California Application December 9, 1950, Serial No. 200,034
4 Claims.
This invention relates to bathroom fixtures and more particularly to a toilet paper holder of the type generally found embedded in the wall of the bathroom.
It is one object of this invention to provide a toilet paper holder of the class described which is simple, attractive and easy to install which is provided with a closure member adapted to normally cover the opening in the holder.
It is another object of this invention to provide a toilet paper holder of the type described embodying a pivoted closure member and novel pivot means for both the closure member and the central rod.
These and other objects and advantages will be apparent from the annexed specification in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of a device embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the device shown in Figure 1. t
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the device is shown ascomprising a shell member H] which is essentially a hollow cylinder having one side or edge cut away. It will be apparent that this results in end pieces II and I2 each of which is a section of a circle greater than a semicircle. This fact is expressed hereinafter in the specification and claims as constituting a major section of a circle.
A rectangular flange [3 is provided which extends perpendicular to the end pieces H and i2 and normal to the shell member In at the edges of each of them respectively. As shown, the flange I3 is provided with a beveled edge l4.
Each of the end pieces II and I2 has brazed or soldered thereto a post I5 which is internally threaded as at I6. The posts [5 are aligned with holes I 1 formed at the center of curvature of the end pieces II and [2 respectively.
A closure member I8 is provided which is a substantially semicyclindrical member having semicircular end pieces [9 and 20. The end pieces l9 and 20 are provided with hubs [9a and holes 2| aligned with the holes I! and screws 22 having threaded portions 23 and cylindrical collars 24 are provided. The screws 22 are adapted to threadedly engage the threads it of the posts l5 and are provided with rounded heads 25.
At its lower edge the closure [8 is provided with a bead 2B, which bead 26 is adapted to engage the flange l3 in its closed position as shown in Figure 2 to limit downward movement of the closure but it will be equally apparent that the bead 26 will also engage the upper portion of the flange when the closure is in full open position as shown in Figure 4.
A rod 30 is provided in the form of two telescop ing hollow cylinders 3| and 32 containing a coil spring 33 therein. This member is conventional with the exception that the end pieces 34 and 35 are dished to form bearings adapted to removably engage the rounded heads of the screws 22 as clearly shown in Figure 3.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the shell It! may be installed in the conventional manner by a carpenter in the wall of the bathroom after which the closure member Hi can be inserted and assembled with the screws 22 threadedly engaging the posts [5 after which the rods 36 may be installed in the conventional manner. It will thus be seen that the entire device is simple, economical in construction and easy to install.
While there has been described what is at present considered a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention and it is intended to cover herein all such changes and modifications as come within the true spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A toilet paper holder comprising: a shell having the form of a cylinder having one side cut away on a minor chord; said shell having end pieces in the form of a major section of a circle; a rectangular flange extending perpendicular to the edges of said shell and end pieces; a substantially semicylindrical closure member having a radius slightly smaller than the inside radius of said shell; said closure member being mounted concentrically with said shell and pivoted to swing from a position substantially wholly within said shell to a position extending out- Wardly of said shell and covering the opening in said shell.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 including internally threaded members mounted on each of said end pieces at the center of curvature thereof; a screw for each of said threaded members adapted to extend through holes in said end pieces and aligned holes in said closure member; said screws each having a cylindrical portion forming a bearing for said closure member and an enlarged head.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 in which said enlarged heads of said screws are rounded and which includes a rod comprising two telescoping tubes and a coil spring mounted therein, each of said tubes having a dished end adapted to removably seat onr-said' roundedc'screwvendsi. V
4. A deviceaase set forth in claim 51 ginjwhich movement of said closure member.
